Hot and cold, dry and wet

Posted by olga , 24 May 2013 · 26 views

As is true in many places, the people around here have a saying about the weather:  "If you don't like it, just wait a few hours and it will change."

On Wednesday, I was griping about the heat---92ºF (33ºC).  It was also dry and I was starting to water the asparagus patch and the vegetable garden.  Well, rain moved in yesterday and late in the afternoon...

The pace quickens

Posted by olga , 22 May 2013 · 82 views

This is a ridiculously busy time of year for a gardener, and being away for 10 days in April didn't help.

I did my volunteer stint at the library yesterday, and we were very busy there.  I left at noon, dropped off food for Jan, went to the village market and then came home, hung out laundry, fixed lunch, collected eggs......and by then it was 92ºF outsi...

A day of rest and a day of work

Posted by olga , 20 May 2013 · 65 views

Sunday was a lazy day. I slept until 9:00!! That's VERY late for me, but I think I was really tired out from all the work involved in the plant sale. I made a Dutch baby for breakfast with a peach and blueberry sauce, and then I goofed off for a while. Carolyn talked me into a quickie walk at the park, so I was vertical for at least half an hour. However,...

Plants, plants and more plants

Posted by olga , 18 May 2013 · 80 views

I have mentioned before that our garden club has a plant sale every May.  We buy annuals, vegetables and some herbs from a nursery and mark them up for resale, but the real moneymaker in this sale is the perennial table.  The club members dig up divisions of their own plants, pot them up, label them (usually :brooding: ) and the money we take in is pure p...

A work day and a day off

Posted by olga , 16 May 2013 · 86 views

Yesterday was a usual day with chores, a walk, and some errands up in town.  However, today I took the moring off with Jan and Doris.

Each year, I plant big pots that go on Main Street for the spring and summer.  In the past, Lynnie did this project with me, but she's out of the picture now.  I asked Jan and Doris if they would like to go to a local nurs...

Chilly! Hooray!

Posted by olga , 14 May 2013 · 87 views

I know, I know---when May comes, people want warmth and blooms and tulips.  However, I am perfectly happy if it's cool, and we have definitely had cool weather for the past few days.  It was down in the 30s overnight, although not so cold that things froze.

I've been doing all the usual---lots of laundry, digging up plants for the Garden Club Plant Sale,...

Busy weekend....until today :)

Posted by olga , 12 May 2013 · 93 views

I must have written in the morning on Friday, although I don't remember. Anyway, we did yardwork and a little cleaning on Friday, but we had to knock off early because we had a party to attend.

I have often talked about our adopted Pakistani family. Baboo got to know the father of the family 15 years ago because their stores were close to each other in t...

May is the blooming month

Posted by olga , 10 May 2013 · 93 views

As I discussed yesterday, May is definitely the blooming month.  Flowering cherry trees, crab apples, tulips, redbuds---it just goes on and on.  I've been working in the yard, because the weeds got a head start on me when I was in Florida and I am beating them back.  However, It's pleasant to work outdoors when the temperature is in the low 70s (22ºC) and...

Relief and a more relaxed pace

Posted by olga , 09 May 2013 · 96 views

Well, some relief.  I still have all my work to do, but it's so nice to wake up in the morning and NOT rush off to a class.  So here I sit, talking to you. :)

We have had a few adventures lately.  3 or 4 mornings ago, Baboo woke me up at 4:50 AM because there was blood on his pillow......and the sheets and the mattress pad and everywhere.  sigh   He had...

Limited time photos

Posted by olga , 08 May 2013 · 106 views

One of my friends from the Florida group (we call ourselves the Cocoa Beach Babes :) ) has given me some of the pictures she took. Since other people are involved, I won't leave these up for very long. However, I like to put up pictures of my friends because I find it amazing that we liked each other when we were 7 years old, and we still like each other....

Struggling, and a victory

Posted by olga , 06 May 2013 · 125 views

I have been struggling for the past 3 or 4 days, and I report this NOT because I want sympathy----rather, I want those of you who are experiencing similar struggles to know that you are not alone.  We are in this together, kids, and it's a fight.

I've been wrestling with the letter that I'm writing to my roommate's husband.  I don't send condolence cards...

Difficult readjustment

Posted by olga , 03 May 2013 · 142 views

This has never happened to me, to this degree.  I am not having a happy time getting back into the swing of things here on the farm. Blech.  But I'm trying.

There have been massive amounts of laundry being washed, and I've started to straighten things out in the greenhouse.  Jan had all my tomato and pepper seedlings in her greenhouse, and I think she ov...

Being home is good, right?

Posted by olga , 01 May 2013 · 103 views

I guess I should be happy to be home, but 10 days of no work and no responsibility has just spoiled me.  sigh.  Well, we can't be on vacation all the time, and I should be grateful for the blessing of 10 days with such good friends.  Let's finish the vacation report:

I left off in my last blog with Friday night when we took our friend to the airport and...

Boogie boards and more food

Posted by olga , 26 April 2013 · 121 views

I know you are all waiting anxiously for more food porn, and I hate to disappoint the foodies here at CB.  Here are a couple of our recent meals.

A few nights ago, my friend from Cairo cooked dinner.  This is an Egyptian dish with lamb, eggplant, tomatoes, onions----and most of the spice cabinet!  Cumin, cayenne, oregano, nutmeg, turmeric, black pepper--...

Report from Paradise

Posted by olga , 24 April 2013 · 92 views

It was a little bit cloudy on Sunday and again on Monday, but then a front moved through and we are now having blue-sky days and breezes:

We walk on the beach, or pick up shells, or just sit in our beach chairs and visit:

On the beach

Posted by olga , 21 April 2013 · 125 views

Well, it was a long travel day, but by 7:30 PM yesterday, my friends and I were reunited here at Cocoa Beach for our 2nd Annual Old Broad Party.  For newcomers to my blog, these three friends have known me since 3rd grade.  We went to a small central school district, so we were together all through the grades.  There were 3 other girls in our little crowd...

Long day

Posted by olga , 19 April 2013 · 97 views

I went to my Pilates class at 8:30 this morning because I KNOW I am going to sit on my butt for the next week and do nothing.  It was a killer---I always tease the teacher that she is a sadist.  The best part of the class is the end, because it feels so good to STOP.  heh

I came home and started doing some laundry, and then we met the pack at 11:00 for a...

Ethel is home

Posted by olga , 18 April 2013 · 112 views

Baboo took the call from the Apple store yesterday, that Ethel was conscious and wanted to go home.  I had too much to do yesterday so I didn't have time to drive up there and get her.  (The Apple store is an hour away.)

Yesterday....let's see.  I washed a couple of loads of laundry, walked with the pack, and did some things that I needed to do in the gr...

Ethel is admitted for observation

Posted by olga , 16 April 2013 · 110 views

This afternoon I had an appointment with the "geniuses" at the Apple store, and the nice young man looked through Ethel's innards and poked around on her hard drive, and couldn't find too much that was wrong.  However, he explained that the file folder with the question mark is NOT a good sign of computer health---which I already knew.  So Ethel has been...

Catching up

Posted by olga , 15 April 2013 · 113 views

Well, here's the situation.  My laptop made some funny clicking sounds when I opened it the other day, so I shut it down and rebooted it.  When it started up, the screen lighted up---but instead of the little turning icon that you get with Macs, I got a file folder with a question mark on it.  Huh?  I went on line (on Baboo's computer) and made an appoint...
