You could download and fill this out, and it might help the nurse understand what will help you in getting the wound treated. I thought it was a good way of communicating the need for privacy or a companion there or something if you are emotional.

Yeah, it really does depend who see's you. Some are a lot more sensitive then others!
Don't feel stupid. You need to be ready to stop for yourself if you choose to. Remember it is a coping mechanism.
I stopped for a while because I felt guilty and I started harming myself in more worrying ways because they were more discrete and I didn't want to disappoint people around me.
You’re not stupid hun :)

I get that A and E is some sort of emergency hospital place, but what exactly does it stand for?

I always considered myself too whimpy to do any "major" self-injury...I know...it's not about being whimpy. I pull and pick.....constantly...

I can't imagine how horrible it must be to have a "medical professional" say shameful things after you already feel like shit...

I had it happen to me in a tiny tiny way. I was going to get a professional massage at a spa/beauty parlor (I TRULy see them as part of my medical treatment) and the intake form asked you what meds you took. Well, right in the small waiting room w/ about 5 ppl in it, she said, "Oh, you take Lithium/...why do you take that?" I tried to convey my need for privacy with eye motions and body language...and she totally missed it. She was NOT my favorite person at that moment.

That looks like a helpful form for those who need it.
my labels

  • Treatment Resistant Depression
  • Borderline Personality Disorder

  • ENDORPHIN DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (what?...your doc never told you about it??)
  • Trichotillomania
drugs i take for fun (not cuz they actually work)

  • Lithium
  • Seroquel (or whatever I find laying around to help me sleep)
  • Buprenorphine (there's a story there - If you believe doctors don't have all the answers, if you consider yourself "too" sensitive to be able to function happily....ask me)

A & E stands for Accident and Emergency - otherwise refered to as the 'ED' - Emergency Department or 'ER' - Emergency Room, or just 'Emergency'

i totally agree, after a really recent trip to A+E after OD and self harm, i was completely out of it, but even then remember feeling as though the doctor was just really mad with me. my cuts didnt need stiches but at no point did they even get cleaned or covered. i ended up just feeling like a massive burden for the entire 48 hours that i was there, given that i feel like a burden to every one in my life anyway.. itwas just a shocking experiance!

I can't believe that a doctor would say something like, "Oh no not you again" - that must have been awful for you and it's also very unprofessional behaviour on the doctor's part. As for the psychiatrist's comments...well, it's not excusable but I can understand why they might have said that. From a health care practitioner's point of view it can be difficult if they feel as though they've tried everything to help a particular patient and none of it is working. That doesn't mean that they're blaming the patient, it just means that they're aware of the limits of what they can do to help and feel frustrated. Most people become doctors or nurses because they care about people and it can be difficult if they feel as if they're not "fixing" things - psychiatrists are only human too and they have as complete a burden of stresses, anxieties and hang-ups as any other person. Now, that doesn't make it ok for them to say things are that are so potentially damaging to the patient (and I'm sorry that it made you feel stupid, because self-harm is never stupid), but maybe they didn't mean it as an attack on you, more just as an expression of exasperation with the limits of their own professional abilities. I remember being quite shocked and disillusioned when I was in medical school and it was brought home to me that most of the time, as a doctor, you're just managing a patient's condition rather than "making them better". I suppose I used to be a lot more idealistic and naive than I am now.
