I have taken both the regular and extended release version of the generic xanax (alprazolam). I prefer the regular version when I am taking it only as needed, because I feel that it works faster. I tried the xr version but could only take it a few days at a time because it made me so tired. That might have gone away had I stayed with it. The xr version didn't seem to last all day for me, but maybe about 6 hours or so and then I had some anxiety/irritability. If I were only going to take a benzo everyday, I would prefer the xr, but since I am taking it with an anti-depressant and only as needed, I prefer the immediate release.

I prefer the XR version because it doesn't make my anxiety yoyo over just a few hours. It's not as flexible for dosing, but is great for long lasting relief. It seems to last about 12-14 hours for me.
