I was talking to my doctor yesterday, and since Seroquel doesn't seem to be controlling my moods as well as it could (although I'm trying the XR version to see how that works), I asked him what other drugs he might consider.
Although he did bring up some of the anti-convulsants (I don't want to take the risk of lithium unless I absolutely need to because I have a bit of kidney damage,) the one medication he keeps bringing up is Zyprexa. It kind of scares me because of the weight gain and such, but I know it's approved for longer-term bipolar I treatment.
Would it be overkill to use it for bipolar II? I generally don't like bitching about side effects, but I'd rather not take the massive weight gain risk if there's something that can work as well or better.
That being said, I tend to think I need to be on at least a low dose of an antipsychotic, as seroquel seems to be controlling the ridiculous amounts of paranoia I used to get. Also, it controls the borderline-ish stuff (emotional overreactions and the like), even if it's not doing so well for the bipolar side of things.
Thoughts?

If I were you I'd try the anticonvulsants your pdoc suggested before turning to another antipsychotic. Why not try an anticonvulsant in addition to the Seroquel?
Dx: Severe OCD & Trichotillomania, Anxiety Disorder (NOS), Depressive Disorder (NOS), Psychotic Disorder (NOS)
Current Rx: Cymbalta 30mg, Paxil 50mg, Abilify 15mg, Lorazepam 0.5mg 3 x daily
Ex-Rx: None yet, but time changes all things...
Updates: Have dropped out of college (temporarily). Not going to the hospital after all, but waiting on an outpatient evaluation instead.

Seroquel has the same risks with weight gain and metabolic issues as Zyprexa.
Ask your doc about anticonvulsants, definitely, but if APs control your symptoms, they may be a better bet.
Lamictal is great but it's not going to do much for the hypomania end of things which seems to be where you've been lately. AAPs also work more quickly than the anticonvulsants.
