I hope this thread doesn't cause problems but I want to use it to help educate.

Here's the pro/con part of the topic.

Pro - a benefit that the medication has for you. What does the medication do for you that's of benefit.

Con - what's a side effect that you dislike or something else you don't like about the medication.

Of course be honest but please no using this thread as a means of scaring people away from considering a medication. It's to help educate them about what other people liked and disliked about taking that particular medication.

------

And with that I will give you my fair example -

Clozaril (Clozapine) -

Pro - removes psychosis when no other AAP (other than FANAPT or SAPHRIS) has. Doesn't cause akathisia like the other APs I've tried.

Con - blood work weekly for first 6months, then biweekly for 6months, and then monthly thereafter... I just hate how I'm still in the every week period but it will pass...

Abilify

Pro: got me out of a "mood episode" QUICK and I felt better. Works well with Bupropion to keep me stable

Cons: probably doesn't do anything for my anxiety, I've gained five pounds because I can't stay away from sweets (I never gain weight on meds) and it makes me sort of drowsy.

What the docs wrote down about my Crazy: Bipolar II, Some anxiety issue
The pills they give me to fix this shit: Lamictal 175mg, clonazepam 1mg , Trileptal 600mg
Pills that did NOT fix this shit: Sertraline, Buspirone, Mirtazipine, Paroxetine, Gabapentin, Effexor XR, Lorazepam, Cymbalta(twice), Zolpidem, Bupropion XL, Pristiq, Fluoxetine, Vistaril, Lexapro, Celexa, Trazodone, Geodon

Pills that worked well enough but side effects were total shit so I stopped: Abilify, Lithium, valium

Abilify-
PROS- Mood swings, gone. Paranoia, gone.
CONS-WEIGHT GAIN!

Klonopin-
PROS- great for anxiety
CONS- not good for sudden panic attacks

Adderall-
PROS- the only thing that'll get me out of bed...like, ever. I concentrate better and am, in general, less add
CONS- none

Celexa-
PROS- great for depression, REALLY great for OCD, helps with anxiety in general
CONS- very minor weight gain

Wellbutrin-
PROS- helps with depression, doesn't make me super drowsy
CONS- I'm a recovering anorexic with tendencies to purge so have to really watch that. Am convinced that i'll have a seizure if I purge.

Lexapro-
PROS- worked well for OCD
CONS- can't afford it

Prozac-
PROS- none
CONS- made me gain tons of weight, serious sexual side effects, stays in the system a long time

Lamictal-
PROS- none
CONS- made me turn into the angriest person in the world. I locked myself in the room just so I wouldn't have contact with anyone and hurt their feelings....I have a laundry list of cons for this one.

Other drugs
Lithium, Depakote, Geodon, all other SSRI's, etc. - simply didn't work.

Edited by kdbeat, 12 April 2010 - 02:52 PM.

Alright. Here you go--

DX/Issues: BP2 (mixed+rapid cycling), OCD, ADD, EDNOS, anorexia nervosa (recovered), BDD, some sort of avoidant shit, really bad & constant paranoia about everything, domestic abuse survivor

Drugs: Lexapro 10, Wellbutrin 450, Abilify 15, Klonopin 2 (max 6mg/day), Adderall 20-30

Past R/X's: Lithium (tried twice), Lamictal (complete hell), Depakote, Abilify (tried twice. second time worked amazingly. AMAZINGLY! Unfortunately, I simply cannot afford it...), Luvox (tried twice), Prozac, Paxil, Effexor, Geodon, Dexedrine (did nothing), Ativan (really good for social phobia), Restoril, Wellbutrin (working amazingly this time around)

Other EEG Biofeedback (worked miracles for my OCD. My compulsions are infrequent and when they happen are manageable the vast majority of the time. Obsessions still happen, not as bad and are manageable), acupuncture- I did this for about a year and a half. While it helped greatly with some problems (my screwed up digestive system, poor immune system, constant lethargy) it did nothing to improve any aspect of my mental health. That said, I definitely think it's worth giving a try :)
