My combination of Welbutrin (generic) and Provigil has been causing me to grind my teeth at night to the point that I've been spitting out my own fillings during the day.  I've found that this problem is relatively unaffected by my overall level of tension and therefore does not respond to tranquilizers/sedatives.  By the way, I noticed some people discussing the use of Beta Blockers earlier in this section.  If memory serves, these drugs reduce tension and arrousal via suppression of the sympathetic nervous system.  While good for anxiety, this can lead to severe depression due to the overall lack of autonomic arousal.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong, it's been awhile since my introduction to psychophysiology course.

I have been taking adderall xr for about 3 years but teeth grinding / jaw clenching have recently become a serious problem for me. I can tell that I am grinding my molars down and my teeth hurt. I know I am grinding during the day at work because I catch myself doing it and I assume i'm doing it at night too because my jaw hurts in the morning. It is the roots of my teeth / jaw that hurt and I'm really worried. This makes me so upset because I'm a phd student and I rely on it to get stuff done. I'm going to get a mouthguard to wear while I sleep and see if i can handle it. I used to take ritalin but went to adderall because I knew it worked better. Does ritalin have the same affect?

Do all stims do this? Anyway to avoid the horror of that article? I brush at least twice a day and use scope, go to the dentist regularly, but only a week in and I have noticed a need to drink more or at least I feel more thirsty.

Not everyone on a stimulant med is a long-term meth addict, binging on sugary sodas, not eating, and
ignoring hygeine activities like brushing their teeth.

If you want to avoid the (2-year-old) article's outcome:

1. Don't abuse stimulants
2. Drink water when you are thirsty.
3. Drink more water even when you aren't thirsty.
4. Brush your teeth, floss, etc.
5. Do not let acidic drinks stay in your mouth - drink up, chase with water
(low stomach pH interferes with amphetamine absorption anyway)

Hey guys! Glad to be back in action.

~ this is happening to me and I want to know if anyone else is experiencing this~

I started taking Adderall about 3 months ago and it completely changed my life for good. About 2 weeks ago I started to have alot of pain in my jaw and my front bottom teeth, within 2 weeks my front bottom teeth have shifted so much that my husband freaked this morning. He could not believe the movement! I have had considerable pain from my jaw and my teeth movement, its UNBEARABLE. Went to the dentist and he said I have a VERY healthy mouth, NO gum disease , cavities, etc. He cant tell me why my teeth have moved so much but he says my jaw pain is from grinding and clenching and it might be the reason for the teeth moving. Anyways, I am going to see a cosmetic dentist on Tuesday to see about bonding (I have had braces 2x's and will not do that again) but in the mean time I was wondering if this has happened to others, I am 100% sure it has something to do with Adderall or the generic version (which I take 30 mgs a day)

Thanks!

Hi.. I know you posted this topic literally years ago, but I wanted to know if you ever figured anything out about your teeth moving/got the surgery?

I ask because I have a small suggestion for you.

I was having the same problem with clenching and grinding my teeth when I started taking Adderall. I literally thought I was going to break my teeth into tiny pieces, it was really intense. Well, my dad is an orthodontist, and he ended up making me a removable bottom retainer that has a piece attached to it to act as a guard to keep me from clenching my teeth. I wear it at night and it has helped soo much with the headaches and jaw aches! I've had it for about a year and a half, and I've kind of worn it down to the point where my bottom canines can reach my top (normal) retainer (I've worn my retainers at night since middle school and I'm 21 now... my dad is an orthodontist... we're pretty big on teeth), but it still works and still keeps my jaw and head feeling normal.

If you haven't done anything about the problem yet, and you are still concerned (yeah it's like 3 years later but hey maybe someone else will read this), then I would really suggest asking your dentist about getting a retainer with a mouth guard made to wear at night. It'll keep you from clenching & grinding, and above all else, it's guaranteed to keep your teeth in place... that's is the main point of a retainer.

Hope this can help someone! :)

Hi,

I take 60mg of Adderall SR, as well as wellbutrin 300mg, Provigil 200mg as needed and Lamictal (100mg). I feel that after 30mg I start to feel a tightness in my jaw. Never really had a problem with my teeth. Maybe u need some type of antianxiety med (Klonopin, Xanax) to help with the tension.

May be experiencing side effects from medication (EPS). The medication cogentin may be helpful. Speak with your doctor that prescribes your meds.

I want to add something about the moving teeth...! I had the same problem a few years ago, before I started on meds - it might be completely incidental that your teeth started moving shortly after starting starting Adderall. For random reasons, I saw three different dentists during the time my teeth would move around - and they all had different opinions on it. Two of them said it has to do with wisdom teeth moving a little, and pushing the other teeth. My jaw also ached - because of the teeth moving, mind you. The third dentist also said that there are different theories on whether or not your wisdom teeth can actually move the rest of your teeth, and that no-one really knows for sure.

Yeah definitely. I was at work yesterday and my manager told me to spit out my gum because I was making movements like I was chewing it ahaha I opened my mouth all the way and was like I'm not :) and she's like wtfff. then later on I noticed she was staring at me and she told me I couldn't eat on the clock ahaha so I had to start paying way better attention. it's mostly the dry mouth that makes me move my tongue around all day. no teeth shifting or grinding, but I'd suggest chewing gum just to have something in your mouth, that def helped for me... it's strange, I chew gum to avoid getting in trouble for chewing gum lol.

Hi dragonfly,

Have you thought about using a mouth guard? I had similar problem that you ran into. My dentist saw holes in my mouth and he said I was grinding my teeth. I was grinding my teeth because of stress and anxiety in my life. My dentist wanted to create a custom mouth guard for me, but it was too much money. I did some research online and found affordable/high quality mouth guards from TotalGard on google. I now have a night guard that has eliminated my teeth grinding and my pain is gone. I hope you find the solution to your problem and find peace within yourself!

I've been on Adderall and Celexa, and clenching teeth has been a significant problem for me as well. A while back, my Periodontist discovered that some teeth were starting to loosen! I had also been aware of very uncomfortable teeth clenching. The solution for me was for my Periodontist to do a bite adjustment. It didn't stop my clenching of course, but it very nicely redistribute the forces of my bite evenly. I felt immediate relief with my teeth and jaw.

As to the side effects of adderall, I have been taking it on and off for about 6 years. I too have noticed the overworked jaw and shifting in teeth. I tend to cope by either mints, gum, or suckers. It gives the mouth something to do instead of grinding your teeth. If you're having problems sleeping, take vitamin C with dinner. According to my doctor (and I will vouch for him) doing so helps counteract the insomnia (Naturally!). To allow yourself to eat (taking adderall severly reduces appetite, more for some than others) get into the habbit of eating a good breakfast before you take adderall; furthermore, get into an excercise routine, your body will require the extra intake for energy and thus boost your appetite. This is everything I had to learn on my own, but it works from what I can tell. I'm no doctor though...

I thought adderall changed me for the better as well, I've been taking it for a little over a year now and am starting to have problems. But when I first starting taking it, i would grid my teeth bad at night. That changed my bottom teeth, so I had to start taking less adderall, then build up a tolerance then eventually start taking a regular dose. If your teeth is having that much of a reaction then definitely slow down, I know you probably don't like hearing it but it's the truth.

Hey everyone,

I am getting very very worried about my teeth. I am definitely grinding, but I think my main problem is my tongue. It seems to push and rub over the top of my teeth with its own mind. I thought I was going nuts thinking that my teeth were literally getting smaller, but I think that is the case. My bite has also changed slightly. Any suggestions about keeping my tongue away from the tops of my teeth? I am so sick of it. I keep telling myself not to and then alternatively finding myself doing it. Adderall has helped me enormously--I couldn't drive on the freeway before or take planes, and I am doing both now. However... I don't want denchers one day!!!
