I have been on Valium for at least 8 months now and it is not helping.  I am still being given the 5mg 2 times a day and 2 at bedtime. I have told my pdoc and tdoc that IT DOES NOT HELP....i have been having hour(s) long panic/anxiety attacks and they just dont seem to care.  What am I supposed to do?  Just keep paying for and taking these meds even though they dont help?  I am getting very tired of none of my meds helping and nobody caring.[/FONT]
DX--> BP, OCPD, PTSD x2, anxiety disorder
RX--> Seroquel 500mg, Lexapro 20mg, about to start back on Lamictal to work my way back up to 200mg.

Did the Valium work for you in the past? If so, you may be developing a tolerance to the medication; if not, you may want to ask your doctor for an alternative that might be more effective.
Diagnosis: Bipolar Disorder NOS (296.90)

Dexedrine (5mg)
Previous Medications:
Adderall, Concerta, Cymbalta, Depakote ER, Effexor XR, Focalin, Geodon, Keppra, Klonopin, Mirapex, Paxil, Provigil, Prozac, Topamax, Valium, Wellbutrin SR, and Zonegran.

Seems like it might be time for a new pdoc. 8 months is a long time to deal with that kind of stuff.
dx:
dysthymia, ADD (mostly inattentive)
(dysthymia well treated, ADD not so much)
rx:
dexedrine 5mg three times/day, sorta
150mg bupropion sr (generic Welbutrin) daily
clonidine for sleep, I forget how much
various heart/bp/cholesterol meds

I do think the benzos lose effect with time.

From my own experience I have decreased benzo use month by month as my brain is slowly healing.    I have come to the conclusion that the panic/anxiety attacks are just the firecrackers on the cake.  If you take care of the baseline brain problems the anxiety decreases and fades.

Perhaps you should re-address the overall issues with your Pdoc in hopes that they will re-assess (sorry for the alliteration)  your progress and make some positive changes that decrease your anxienty.              A.M.

Also:  Are extended release formulations available?  I found with xanax that the ER made a huge difference in response since I wasn't yo-yoing the blood levels every 4 hours. One other possiblity, perhaps some  of the other long acting forms might do better like klonopin or ativan (I have no knowledge whether they are appropriate). [edit]

Hey, I have been on klonopins before and I didnt like them.  I built up a tolerance to it and when I did enough to help me it made me MEAN!!!!! The valiums have never helped and even after 8 months I am still on the same dose. My other meds are Neurontin 300mg 3 times a day and pamelor (nortriptyline) 100mg at bedtime (just uppped from 75mg at bedtime). I hope I remember all the questions. :P

Thanx  :D

so how about discussing some different meds with your pdoc.  you said that klonopin did not work for you... just curious, though - did you take brand name klonopin or the generic brand clonazepam.  I know of many people who have said that clonazepam didnt work for them but swear by the brand name klonopin... just a though....

how about trying another benzo (like ativan or xanax, for example).  I mean, im not a medical professional and might not even be right in my info.... the point is, though, that if you arent doing well with your anxiety, you really need a med change.... it is no way to leave.  you *need* to try and really stress that to your doctors.  it is just not at all fair to you to make you go through this...

Anyway, I hope that things start to get better for you.  you deserve it! :)

be well

Is the Pamelor for depression or anxiety?

I've found that paroxetine (Paxil) has helped lessen my anxiety to a great extent.

Opelia - I was on the generic (clonazepam).  I tried telling both my pdoc and tdoc that it DOES NOT WORK, but I dont think they care

Mack- Pamelor is for depression, which I still dont think that it works...all I do is sit around the house and do as little as possible, which is really hard on the kids when i dont feel like taking them outside or washing clothes.....im so sad

The next logical step would be to try an atypical anti-psychotic such as seroquel or zyprexa.  They work well for most poeple but side effects can be an issue.

De-gnosis: ADD, recurrent depression (or maybe bpII in the guise of such), Asperger's, OCD, social anxiety
Today's Pill Menu: Dexedrine, Wellbutrin (Budeprion), Topamax, Risperdal, clonazepam

It is so strange because I just realized that my pdoc is doing the same thing w/ my Neurontin.  I was put on Neurontin in July of last yr, 300mg 2-3 (always 3 tho) .  I tell them that I can't tell a difference in myself when I take it but when I dont take it i can tell a difference.  I hope that makes sense and you all keep in touch w/ this thread.  Thanx for all the replies and caring.

Ditto everything everyone else has said.  8 months is a pretty long time to be on a benzo, just because they are really addictive.  Get a new Pdoc ASAP.  Maybe you should try Lexapro?
