dx: severe, refractory double depression. GAD. OCD, paranoia, occasional psychosis.
Depersonalization and anxiety out the wazoo, no matter which meds I take.

Man, he really is!  AM, there's a box of pins on my desk in case you run out.

What I really want to know is this: why does a topic about gin have to be pinned?  Is gin more important than bourbon?

Is Gin more important than bourbon?  Absolutely.

A Gin and Tonic (with lime wedge) protects one against malaria, cholera, and scurvy

Tanqueray Gin consumption maintains an important tie with the mother country England, the number one foreign investor in the U.S.

Schweppes Tonic Water consumption both maintains economic ties to our number one trading partner, Canada, as well as providing employment for quinine bark scrapers in South America

Lime consumption provides employment for lime citrus growers and pickers

Ice cube consumption provides employment for refrigerator manufacturers

Need I say more?

Are we eliminating bourbon from consideration?  What of all those cute little bourbon-makers down in Kentucky and other southern climes?  Those guys in the plaid shirts and straw hats---are they not of value in our society?

And what of the barrel-makers, and the charcoal-makers, because fine bourbon is aged in wooden barrels and filtered before it's bottled?

And do they drink gin at the Kentucky Derby?  They do not, sir!  They drink mint juleps, made with fine Kentucky bourbon.  The mint is grown in America!!  The sugar comes from our own cane growers in Florida!  This is an all-American drink, with none of that taint of the effete Brits about it!

I place bourbon back in this contest, for your consideration.

I just gotta chime in here.

Rye Whiskey. Don't forget Rye.

A. Marshall,
You were up really late doing the PI sheets and links. I am a bit in awe of your efforts! Thank you for all you do here, and also for the help with my med change...I was flippin' and you are very kind.

Can't remember what I'd mix with the Tanqueray but, uh, it wasn't legal. So it's a trigger... :(

Olga isn't rye a kind of bourbon?

I happened to see "Modern Marvels: Distilleries" on the History Channel the other day. Fascinating. Here's the discription:

From water and grain...to mash...still...vat...barrel and bottle--the distilling of alcoholic spirits is a big business and near-sacred religion. Its acolytes eye the color, swirl the glass, inhale the bouquet, sip, then ponder their ambrosia. What's your pleasure? Bourbon, Scotch, Rum, Gin, Vodka, or Tequila? We trace the history of distilling from the one-man/one-still tradition to the Voldstead Act of 1920 that devastated American distilleries to the mega-sales and high-volume distillery of today.

According to the History Channel's website, it's going to repeat on Saturday, January 14 @ 2pm ET/PT.

I saw that same episode of Modern Marvels, Saturday when I was still too sick to get out of bed.

My vote: Boodle's Gin. Try it!

um sorry darlings, but gin wins by far!  i cannot drink bourbon, although i acknowledge that many love it.  but the taste of gin and tonic with a wedge of lime has that je ne sais quoi that NOTHING else has.  and i can tell you that my british boss has definitively said that tanqueray is for peasants.  the real deal is beefeaters or bombay.  although hemingway was very fond of gordon's, which is more economical and i can vouch that is is just as good as any other gin, although the tanqueray sapphire provides a certain eclat when you offer it to someone.  but at home alone, there's a big bottle of gordon's in the freezer!

p.s. boodles seems okay, but it is not as readily available.

My turn
Gin makes me crazy mean if I overindulge. Vodka is my juice of choice....
I became a vodka snob---Grey Goose, Ketel One, Belvedere. Than a friend told me she saw a tv show with those blind taste trials, and the vodka snobs ended up choosing some bar label as their favorites, sipping it straight. I found that hard to believe, and even thou I am now unemployed, when it comes to a martini, its got to be top shelf-on the rocks, with a lemon peel. Probably won't be too long before its back to the $8.99 fifth-or give it up completely.

So Sylvy,
What do you consider to be the top-shelf gins?

I am not a connoseur, but have always drunk Tanqueray and like it.  I've been dabbling with Bombay Saphire. It is quite mild and I don't think it has enough flavor to hold up in my G&T's.    I haven't tried any other gins.  I do appreciate the other endorsements.

I've been dabbling with making a martini that is palatable, and there the mild Bombay does better, with Tanqueray being overpowering.

Researching last month, it seemed that generally Tanqueray, Bombay Saphire and Beefeaters generally came up as the highest quality gins. There is actually a wide variety in gins, with the Dutch gins being in a completely different class.

In the end I think that just like wines, the "Best" gin is the one you like.

Don't do the gins (well everyone so often on a very hot summer day, a gin and tonic, with tons of ice, and a lime is so refreshing, but like i said one too many, and I turn into a not nice madwoman - something about those berries. I trust vodka, I know my limits, and I agree, best is the one you like. I just hate that I like the  expensive ones, seeing as my funds are slowly depleting. I remember back in the old old days of drinking Bali Hai  and Boones Farm Apple "wine"-now that was a hangover. Straight vodka never gives me a hangover, another factor of import. A very important factor, it takes me two days to recover from one of those. I hate getting old.

At home there is always a large bottle of Gordon's which I find to be a good overall gin. Gordon's is econmical. I must confess -- warning -- my drink of choice these days is Grodon's with White Cranberry Peach juice.

Ordering a drink out, I rarely leave the house out is scary, I always go for Tanqueray and tonic with extra lime. If Tanqueray is not available, then Beefeaters will be fine. Although Tanq trumps Beefeaters.

I do not like the Bombay Saphire and many other what I call "newer gins". I like my gin to be gin minus too many botanicals. Vodka is the highest selling distilled alcohol in the USA (according to the Modern Marvels episode). The explosion of new vodkas and flavored vodkas onto the market blows my mind. I do not want a bunch of fancy gins around the classics, Tanqueray, Gordon's, Beefeaters, and I include Boodle's, will suffice.

AM,

IMHO, the best martini can be made with Boodle's. Half the time I do not even add the vermouth and just drink Boodle's on ice with olives, it is that smooth. Anchovy stuffed olives when I can afford them. For everyday use, for gin and tonics, etc. using Boodle's would be wasteful. I make a damn fine martini, my father tought me well. Someday I look forward to sharing a martini with you AM.

And thanks for the original post, AM. I discovered this thread just last night. How could I have not seen it sooner! Wonderful, simply wonderful

Erika,
What proportions do you use for gin/vermouth?

I don't like drinking straight liquor, nor straight gin.  I started with a 3:1 ratio, which I thought too strong of gin. Last night a 1:1 with some extra stirring time in the ice and a big queen spanish olive (a bit salty).

It came out quite smooth and a had a delightful taste that wasn't overpowered by the gin.  Actually, it had a completely different taste than either of the ingredients.

One writer commented that you can never have the same martini twice.  :)

A.M.  (who shouldn't be keeping liquor in the house, but feels socially unsophisticated without understanding martinis).
