Adderall IR: Generic vs. Brand Effectiveness

Hi,

It seems like it's been almost a year from when this topic was discussed (i found it on google search for adderall IR). Anyway, I have a question on adderall, so if anyone reads, here it goes:

Is there a difference between brand adderall IR vs. generic in terms of quality and effectiveness? I was previously on Adderall XR, and honestly I'm quite comfortable with the XR, very smooth, kicks in about 30-40 mins, hardly can tell when it wears out. In fact, that "hardly can tell when it wears out" part was the reason I switched to IR today for trial at least. I used to take XR 30 mg early in the morning, but I could hardly fall asleep at night. It lasted too long, although the peak effects were gone after 6-8 hours. To be honest, I loved XR especially on days i worked on tv/film sets where your work day is anywhere from 12 to 16 long draining hours.. But not every day I do that and sometimes I had shorter days, so I decided to try IR.. I actually wanted to try dexedrine (i dont know how different) because it's supposed to last as long with immediate release but last about 6 hours or so (relatively shorter) on extended release spansules, and supposed to be a bit more intense throughout since it's a bit more potent from what i read. she was going to prescribe me that but then for some reason changed her mind and said try adderall IR instead using a few maneuvering excuses, so I got prescribed 60 x 30mg adderall IR, 2x30mg a day. This is actually twice the dose than i was taking before, because i was previously taking 1x30mg XR. So i actually expected even some euphoric peak when i was taking it. but even though it's been an hour since i took my 30mg IR, i feel nothing. It's yet to kick in, but it hasn't. Could it have anything with it being generic instead of brand adderall? I was going to buy brand adderall but the pharmacy didn't have that many adderall 30 mg in stock, they said they have generic, and i asked whether it would work exactly the same, they said it will because it's the same ingredients. it doesn't have any generic brand name on it, it only says "dextroamphetamine/amphetamine salt combo" and from walgreens. could it be the factor why it hasn't worked so far. i took it late at night tonight because i need to do late night editing work.

i liked the fact that 60 pills cost me $70, vs. 30 XR pills of same dose (30mg) had cost me $150+ in walgreens (or $124 at vons' pharmacy instead), but i hope lack of effectiveness is not the payoff with generic.

thanks.

I've been taking XR for several years, but when I was taking IR, I personally noticed no difference between generic and brand.

However, despite what everyone tries to tell us, while the "active" ingredients are the same between brand and generic, the fillers usually are not. And even the active ingredients can vary by up to 10% (per the US FDA). So it's NOT "just in your head" if you notice a difference between a generic and brand medication. And like all other crazy meds, what works for one person may not work for another. For example, the generic Ambien from TEVA didn't work for him, but worked fine for me. Prasco also works fine for me. But my pharmacy recently switched to Apotex and it didn't work at all for me. Go figure.

The generic you got from Walgreens in my opinion is horrible. Do an internet search and there are literally articles devoted to complaints regarding this version of adderall. It is a pink pill. I started a few months ago on generic Adderall from Eon labs which worked good. However, I went to Walgreens last week to fill my new prescription for this month and got those. I figured they would work the same but I was wrong...huge difference. I was irritable, speedy, had a really bad headache, and more...

This version actually made me want to concentrate less and do random things. I would take this version if I wanted a bunch of energy and perhaps as a performance enhancer. But that is not why I take Adderall. I take it to help me with my ADHD.

Anyways, this incident prompted me to not bother with any of the generic forms and just pay the extra co-pay for the brand name IR 30mg. My pharmacy had to special order it because virtually no pharmacy carries the name brand on hand. It will come in a few days and I'm sure it will be better than the cheap pink ones.

FYI, for some reason I don't really trust the company that makes these generic pink ones. They are a small company and obviously have to make the drug very cheap. The FDA is also significantly less stringent on generic drugs. They are allowed by law to be less pure than the name brand. Also, who do you think is actually regulating and enforcing these guidelines on these cheap companies? What do they do; go to the factory every day and observe? Highly unlikely.

Hello all,

I have been taking Adderall xr 25mg and Adderall IR 20mg for about 6months. The xr in the morning when I first wake and the IR between noon and 1pm. This combo works great for me.

The IR version is from Walgreens, I think Corepharma is the manufacturer, it's a pinkish colored pill. I have had no trouble with this medication at all.

Good luck to all.

Trey

The generic Adderall is now made by Barr as well. I had severe reaction the pink 15mg Barr and do not want to waste money on Name Brand if its made by the same company now. The Eon seem to work fine.

I was taking Adderall XR 30 mg once a day on days that I had a lot of stuff to do and then Adderall IR 15mg 1-2 times a day when I didn't have as much to do. However, I moved recently and had to get a new doctor for whatever reason this doctor feels that it's necessary to start me on 1.5 10mg twice a day of the generic Amphetamine salt combo tabs. I go to Kaiser and I'm not sure if I have to specifically request the actually name brand of Adderall or tell my doctor, but since I've been taking the generic version I've experienced horrible headaches and nausea that I never experienced with my old Adderall regime. My doctor says that I need to wait for my body to adjust to the change - but he seems a little slow because not only does the generic version make me feel sick but it has no effect!!! Should I change doctors or what? Suggestions??

In most cases a pharmacy will fill a prescription with a generic unless the prescription is written specifying a name brand as medically necessary. Even then, if your insurance company charges a higher co-pay for non-generics you'll probably have to pay at the higher scale.

My doctor says that I need to wait for my body to adjust to the change - but he seems a little slow because not only does the generic version make me feel sick but it has no effect!!! Should I change doctors or what? Suggestions??

In the case of "mixed amphetamine salts" there are a number of different companies providing a generic formulation. Since you don't seem sure which one is causing the problem, beyond the knowledge that it's a generic, I'm not at all certain that you would have better results with a different doctor.

So I've been taking Adderall on and off for the past year. I pretty much flunked out one semester due to my depression/slight eating disorder-whatever you want to label it and my "physician" put me on adderall. (Threw in a bottle of prozac too, as if you can just take that for fun, right?) Anyway, never touched the prozac. I thought I was getting the regular adderall (nongeneric) but maybe not...according to some, you have to specifically ask for the actual stuff or the pharmacy will just give you the generic brand?

Anyway, I've never had TOO many problems with it. Always took 10-15 mg at the MOST. Recently, I was given 15mg pills and break them into quarters, taking one to two a day. HORRIBLE side effects. I have the God awful pink pills...D-Amphetamine Salt Combo - MF BARR as some of you have mentioned...

I had a severe headache for two days (couldn't figure out why...) but I was OFF adderall for a good week by then. I stopped taking it because I feel like I lose all of my emotions. I feel like crying at random moments, but can't seem to feel emphathetic towards those closest to me...put it this way, I care so much about them, but no longer know how to show it.

Silly me, I checked the bottle today, shocked to see it WASN'T Adderall, but a generic. I called my physician, waiting to hear back...

I can't say whether or not I was on regular Adderall before because I no longer have the bottles. This generic crap makes me nauseous, lacking focus/concentration. It's almost like a get a high from it, but ever 3-4 hours I need to take it again or I want to punch a wall and scream. I start feeling like I am going to go out of control. Its a terrible feeling and I hope no one has to ever feel like I have for the past few days...

Heads up-pinkish/peachish pill from WALGREENS. I agree with whoever else said it, I never plan to go to that pharmacy again.

I have a feeling XR would be way too much for me...advice anyone? Or better yet, are other people feeling similar effects from this stuff? Ive been wanting to punch walls and couldn't figure it out for the longest time. I have always been an extremely calm person...

Any insight would be awesome. Thanks!

Your doctor seems, to me, like a quack. I do not wish to dig into your personal life, but based on what you've said, these pills may or may not be making your situation worse. Any doctor should know that adderall and its generics cause a moderate to severe decrease in appeitite, depending on the person. This is a bad combination with an eating disorder. Adderal is not to be used to treat depression, as it can mess with neurotransmitter levels, more specifically dopamine, and if you've been experiencing depression that's the worst thing to do. An anti depressive/mood stablizer would be much more appropriate for your depressive tendencies, and may help you do better in school. Adderal seems to be not the right fit for you.

I'm taking the 15mg IR salt combo currently, and I actually like it. Everyone has different reactions to drugs, and it's ok if one doesn't work for you, as there are many other options. I recommend swtiching and seeing how another one works. I am no doctor, and you may take my advice at your own risk, i'm merely trying to help a person with a similar situation to mine. I hope everything works out for you in the future. Have a sit down with this physician or psychiatrist and try to work out another solution. Good luck ;)

In reality, amphetamine triggers the release of both noradrenaline and dopamine, the latter of which is the least commonly-targeted neurotransmitter in treating depression. While amphetamine is not a first-line or even second-line treatment for depression, it is in fact used as an adjunct in treating "treatment-resistent" depression. I've no idea why you're worried about the effects of amphetamine on an eating disorder that the poster didn't even talk about.

The doctor may be a "quack" or maybe not. You only have the word of an anonymous person on the internet who seemed quite proud of not taking the prescribed antidepressant. Whether or not any given antidepressant would work for the "depressive tendencies" that the poster didn't describe, let alone whether an anticonvulsant would, is something I doubt anyone would have an informed opinion on.

After years of buying adderall and ritalin in high school/college to get by...I finally talked to my doc about getting treated and was honest with him. He started me off on 10mg generic, and it did nothing. Bumped me to 20mg generic 2X times a day and though it was way better then nothing, I noticed a lot of side affects. Took it for 10 months, and decided to switch to Ritalin as the adderall just stopped working and all I got was negative side affects. Anyhow, got ritalin generic and felt horrible on it, did some research finally on generic vs. brand and took it back to my doc after 3 weeks and got a new script for brand (cost me $170 vs. $15 co-pay cause Aetna sucks donkey balls...once I get to $250 for the year I will only pay $40 per script, and I pay $250/month for insurance already...yippee).

Noticed right away the difference, less side affects, worked better, lasted longer. I plan now after this script is up to ask my doc to put me back on the adderall but go with brand only. The point I wanted to make is that I compare generic vs. brand like comparing bankers club/popav or some other cheap vodka to drinking grey goose. The chemical compound alcohol is the same in every alcoholic beverage, but if you drink 3 martinis of grey goose vs. 3 martinis of cheap shit, you will feel way better the next day. Ever drink a lot of cheap beer and get the shits the whole next day and feel horrible? Same theory... sure, chemicals are the same but the quality of ingredients used to make them are not. Every forum I read seems that especially with these types of meds the brand works better then generic. The pharm companies own the FDA, of course the FDA and companies are going to say there stuff is just as good and the "same" chemical active ingredients, if they didnt nobody would buy them its all about money. Would you go to a bar and order a "bankers club on the rocks"? Hell no unless you wanted to cringe every time you took a sip, feel a dirty drunk all night and feel horrible the next day.

Bottom line...if you can afford it stick with brand, or at least try both. Everybody reacts different, but from what I can tell there is DEF a difference here just like with booze.

It is true that the FDA allows a certain variation percentage between a brand and generic drus but what consumers do not realize that these same variations are allowed between lots and batches of the same brand drug. In other words your Adderal 20mg brand most likley does not contain exactly 20 mg. Even all the pills from the same bottle can vary tablet to tablet. The next lot from the Adderal factory might be different again and this is allowable by the FDA. Sctientifically there is not reason a generic should not work as well unless you are allergic or sensitive to the inactive ingredients which can be different.

That is definitely true, but I feel like I read somewhere that the variation allowed for generics is a bit larger than for the branded one. I'd have to go look it up again to be sure. Either way, to get every single pill from every batch to be exactly identical would be extraordinarily hard (but possible). And people think their meds cost too much now...

Sctientifically there is not reason a generic should not work as well unless you are allergic or sensitive to the inactive ingredients which can be different.

Some of the ones that get the most complaints are the extended release ones (hi there, Wellbutrin), which I suspect is because of them releasing at a different rate. The one I've noticed the biggest difference with for myself is Keppra, whose generic seems to kick in and then wear off dramatically faster than the branded one. I imagine it's something to do with the inactive binders/fillers/whatever being different and it getting broken down and absorbed faster after I swallow it, but I really have nothing to support that other than taking a wild guess.

Anyway, as far as the actual topic goes, I've never taken the brand version of Adderall, but I started the generic this spring and am very pleased with it, despite it being the Barr one lots of people are bitching about. Well, I was very pleased until 5 mg stopped being enough for me. We'll see if it starts working again properly after I bump it up to 7.5 or 10 over the next week or two. I had some of the issues people are complaining about with the generic version of Adderall when I tried switching to Dexedrine briefly, but, at least for me, the generic Adderall seems to work how everyone says the brand one does.

So i have taken the generic Adderall 20 mg for like 3 years and it has worked but i just switched to brand and i am fuckin glad i did because it is so much cleaner.

To all those who have encountered the dreaded pink pills, my girlfriend took one and got sick as fuck, but she was fine with all other versions. Well she is lactose intolerant, as are MANY people who mostly dont know that they are. I think there was lactose in those pink pills because they made me feel shitty too, especially after my second dose....just felt very uncontrolled and rigid.

The body is an extremely sensitive organism and even minor things can make it feel off-kilter. also one never REALLY knows what some small mexican company might be putting in as filler, or if they are REALLY using pharmaceutical grade Amphetamine, because there are many different amphetamine isomers that can come out if the chemist sucks.

It is nice to THINK the FDA has our backs, but if you look at their track record with an open awareness you will see that they have missed the boat many times when it comes to regulation of drug manufacturing.

That's really not what lactose intolerance does to a person.

I just had to chime in on this one, as I found this board via a Google search for "generic adderall". I lost my job a couple of months ago and got my own health insurance. The plan I chose would only cover generics, so I switched ALL my meds over to generic thinking "big deal", right?

I switched to generic Paxil, generic Effexor and generic Adderall.

Whoa. Talk about a bad trip. It took about a month, but one morning, out of the blue, that familiar wave of panic, anxiety and depression swept over me and almost knocked me over. I couldn't even look at my kids in the morning. It's been seven YEARS since I felt that way.

Now that I have gotten another job, I went to the doc earlier this week and asked her to switch me back to the name-brand stuff. I'm now a totally different person.

Since the generic Paxil and Effexor wouldn't be kicking in fully yet, I've got to assume that the generic Adderall was crap-tastic.

Granted, it was dumb to switch everything all at once, but we were in a financial pinch. I'm never switching over to generics again.

Just my two cents. ;)

I have been taking Adderall XR - 25 mg a day for quite some time now and just recently picked up a bottle of the Walgreens 15mg 2x a day...Ive noticed a significant difference as well...it made me depressed, irritable, cloudy headed, tense and it gave me servere lack of focus and feelings of inadequacy. The Generic version of adderal is NOT AT ALL the same medication. You will be just fine taking the XR. I tried the generic years ago when it first came available, I was so happy because it was much less expensive and like a lot of people my insurance doesn't cover this med. Well, of course I noticed RIGHT AWAY that it had a very different feel. It is, to me, a completely different drug. I have continued to pay the full price for Brand ever since whenever I have it filled. It is dissappointing and makes me feel like they think we are stupid, to think we won't notice any difference. Now that Barr owns it they have recently decided to change the original Brand name form! I found this out when I went to have my script filled as usual and when I went to take one I saw that it had a symbol on it instead of the usual AD. It is the same color and shape but if you look at it closely anyone who is familiar and happy with the original brand can tell it is a bit different looking as well besides the symbol. I tried it and it has that gross sweet taste that the generic had, the generic that I hated! Uggg. I called the pharmacy to see if she mistakenly filled my script with generic and she told me that the company's new bottle said, "new tablet identity". I explained that it was different altogether and she was very helpful in getting me Barr's # etc. She told me to ask them why they changed it and didn't tell anyone. I did this, and have called them twice now and another time before when I had taken their awful generic, they sort of got a protective, wierd attitude. About the "new identity" thing she got all sassy and told me that the FDA approved the new formulation and that is all they are required to inform us of(the new identity, that is) I was like, "take it easy, I am just trying to understand why it is different and what I can do about it since it doesn't work well for me". She kind of chilled out and said that someone would want to contact me to ask some questions etc. if I could help out with this? I said if it would make them change it back then of course. Anyway the whole back and forth with them kind of freaked me out a little, why are they so protective and so reluctant to share ANY info." They were soooo careful with their wording it was REDICULOUS... So basically I didn't get anywhere with that and haven't yet heard back from anyone. I think it is safe to assume that the "new formulation" is a cheaper version for them to make. It sucks. I am thinking of trying that new Vy.. something or other one. Can't think of the name at the moment. Has anyone else tried this "new tablet identity" one? The Barr representative said that some places will still have the original version but that they are no longer making it and it will eventually be depleated and replaced completely with this new formulation. Thoughts anyone?

The "new" brand is also just as expensive as the old, much better, depleating version. Maybe a dollar or two cheaper. What are they thinking?

Wow, way to go admitting to a federal offense on an internet forum.
