Can one Wellbutrin make you high?

I know this sounds crazy. One of anything shouldn't do squat. Maybe this is all my imagination. If so, tell me.

I took one Wellbutrin XL 150mg this morning. I've felt pretty good all day long. Amazingly well, as a matter of fact. I'm guessing this isn't normal. Or maybe it is. Anyone have experience with Wellbutrin and can tell me if this is normal or not?

I don't want to get manic. Maybe Wellbutrin works quickly and this is what normal feels like. If so, I could get used to this.

Do you actually *feel* manic, or is it just that you haven't felt normal in so long that normal feels manic? Have you ever had bipolar symptoms before? I know that Wellbutrin is one of the few antidepressants that BP's like because it's less likely to cause a mixed state than SSRI's. It's probably the most activating AD out there, so I can understand how you'd feel an immediate response. I tend to feel a little jittery a couple hours after I take mine. WB is still my favorite antidepressant. It works better for me than anything else. I hope it works for you!

It's kinda stimulating and kicks in pretty quick. It's not unusual to feel something speedy the first few days. If it's more than you'd get off a few cups of coffee there might be a problem. It should mellow out during the first week.

Guess I should have started this by saying that I'm BPI. I'm on all sorts of other meds for the BP. I just added Wellbutrin this morning to try to help with the depression/apathy/sadness I've been having for a very long time. I don't actually feel manic but I do feel a whole heck of a lot better than I did yesterday. I haven't felt normal in so long that I haven't a clue what it feels like.

The SSRI's that I've tried have all made me manic in a matter of days. If Wellbutrin is more activating than the SSRI's then I may be in trouble. If it stays at this level, I can handle it.

I hope it works for me too!

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try to hang in there and see what happens. Right now I feel like I could stay up all night, so I'd say it's more than a couple of cups of coffee, but not out of control. If it'll calm down some that would probably be better.

Sylvan,

If I was you and it messed with my sleep, I'd call my doc tomorrow instead of taking more. The 100mg immediate release might work better. I'd also talk to your doc about Mirapex. It plays with dopamine in a different way. It works well for some, but not for all.

SSRIs are horrible experiences for me. Same with SNRIs. Wellbutrin probably is too strong. Mirapex, however, works well at a lower dose. For me, it's a truly wonderful med.

I should explain that WB isn't activating in a manicy kind of way. It's more likely to be a problem for someone prone to anxiety. VE is right--for me, it usually feels like I had too much coffee, then mellows out after a while. It might be a start-up side effect for you, maybe something that will always happen.

Remember, feeling good is a *good* thing, even if it's not what you're used to. ;)

I stayed up later than usual but when I did go to bed, I went to sleep fairly easily. This morning my butt is dragging. No signs of mania at all.

I'm still debating on whether or not to take another Wellbutrin. Right now I'm leaning towards taking it for a couple of more days just to see what happens. If it messes with my sleep or clearly is making me manic then I guess I'll have to quit.

Mirapex sounds like a good alternative to Wellbutrin. I'll have to check on it if this doesn't work out.

I'd keep taking it if I were you. I think you need to give meds at least a couple of weeks to judge their effect.

When I started with Wellbutrin, I was out on my property cutting brush and weeding the asparagus patch and leaping tall buildings in a single bound. heh Loved it. But that wore off after about 3 or 4 days and I was back to my version of "normal." Except I wasn't depressed anymore.

Stick with it. You might be very happy with it.

Wellbutrin put me in a mixed state from hell the whole two months I was on it. But as usual, ymmv.

SSRI's in general are bad news for me also, unless I'm on a mood stabilzer.

I vote with the others. Give it a fair chance.

Sometimes you have to futz with the timing for Wellbutrin. Which flavor are you taking? Immediate release, SR, or XL? Are you taking the name brand or the generic? If taking it in the morning keeps you up all night, try taking it before you go to bed or in the afternoon.

Another fun thing about WB, for me at least, is that it makes me want to have sex. All. The. Time. I keep taking the Lexapro so I won't go out and start humping everything in sight.

I'm taking Wellbutrin XL, name brand. My psyMD wouldn't let me take the generic. He said he'd had too many problems with it in the past.

I took another one this morning and it feels pretty much like it did yesterday. I can take on the world. I've got my diet/eating under control and I'm actually getting a little exercise. This really is an amazing drug.

I haven't noticed wanting to have sex. I haven't wanted to have sex for a couple of years. If Wellbutrin will fix that I'd be thrilled, and so would my husband.

smart psyMD!

if memory serves me correct i felt almost high for a little while at first. but it was sluggish high, like opiates or something. however, the mood change was LOVELY. it did settle in after a few weeks and i didn't feel high or tired anymore. my motivation level, however, did stay exceedingly high when compared to my pre-WB state!

i did help mine, but not instantly. it was more like i felt better over time, so wanting sex (and other pleasures!) was a natural extension. i wasn't so anhedonic that nothing felt good anymore. that was also a huge and very welcome change.

stay on it for a little while to see what it feels like after the "high" stage. good luck ;)

The first day I took WB XL, 150 mg, I became immediately energized. It was great. I couldn't believe that a single dose would work like that. The dragging on-and-on depression started to lift right away but I still had lots of anxiety, and my pdoc was actually targeting anxiety with this, so he raised it to 300 mg.

After that, I was mildly high for months. What a relief! It finally settled down in the Fall, but I've been pretty mixed since then. Anxiety is bad, but I don't fault WB for that. Winter and stress is bringing me down hard.

I wouldn't want to give this one up. In fact, I wouldn't mind upping the dose.

I've been on it for 2 years. When I first started, I was a total speed-racer for a week. It wasn't bad manic, just sorta funny, but it does mellow out. But it did take at least a week. I'd stick with it, it's a good drug. I've been on lots and am pretty jaded with some, but the WB is a keeper.

Any chores or such that you may have been putting off, do them now! hehe

Hey Sylvan,

That's good news! If you're sleeping fine w/no signs, enjoy the extra energy!! ;)

Wellbutrin is one of the common drugs prisoners try to crush up and inhale to get high. It can definitely make people high, but it has that nasty little seizure side effect at the doses that would normally make someone high. That's kind of a deterrent.

The stuff was like speed for me when I first started taking it. I literally could not stop shifting my weight for 2-3 hours after taking each pill. Within a month it started to balance out though. After awhile, it was about as stimulating as drinking a Pepsi - nothing bad.

Can you get Wellbutrin in the UK for depression? I think it is called Zyban for smoking cessation but not sure if it is used as an AD though.

Wellbutrin always helps me out of the deep, suicidal depressions I get. It is fast acting for me. Within days I see a difference. I'm BP so I often swing the other way after a few months and have to discontinue it. It is always there if I need it again, which is comforting. I haven't needed an AD for a while now, thankfully.

My understanding is that Zyban is a completely different drug.

I am experiencing the same thing. I am on lexapro and just upped wellbutrin xl to 300mg today. I feel high as a kite. I know this won't last. I feel like I'm on speed of some sort. Not anxious. But very talkative and just sped up.

My Dr warned me that it makes some people feel like this in the beginning. So Im hanging in there. You should too. I'm not bipolar, but i definitely feel manic. It will pass.

Wellbutrin has seems to be one of best antidepressant-add-ons out there. I've read where many people eventually taper off their 1st AD med and just take this.

I am definitely no expert, but all the research I've done makes me very hopeful about this med. Many other ADs have not worked and left me discouraged.

Good Luck.

I felt the same way when I started wellbutrin. It went away pretty quickly.

When the Wellbutrin SR I take started to kick in, I admit, I did feel pretty high for several days. Almost like when I took X about 10 years ago...almost. It did wear off and now I do feel pretty normal, but not nearly as depressed.
