mood disorders & low blood sugar?

I have a problem that I will call low blood sugar, because that is what my family calls it, but I dont know the actual cause. If I go too far past my regularly scheduled eating times without any food, I get mood swings and feel sick. I usually feel weak and get a headache, and I either get incredibly angry or else really anxious. As soon as I get a few bites of food in me, all the symptoms magically go away.

My mother (who also has a mood disorder), has the same problem. She used to go into rages if she was hungry, but after eating she was immediately in a good mood again.

It doesnt usually bother me, I just bring snacks whenever there is a chance my mealtime will be delayed, but I got to wondering about it lately.

Do other people here have this problem? Do you think it is somehow related to mood disorders? Does meal disruption effect people's mood like sleep disruption does? :)

I also have what my mother (a nurse) deems hypoglycemia. She has it too. It is very much how you have just described it for me. Going without regular food can make me anxious, moody, irritable, shaky and is often accompanied by a headache.

I definitely have an issue with low blood sugar.

I become very irritable. Not fit for company.

I try hard not to let it go too long.

sometimes just a tiny snack will help sustain my mood

Years ago, when i worked in an office if i forgot to eat lunch

I was not too pleasant, the office manager took me aside

and told me I scared the admin girls.......

I'd just like to add that if you think that you have a problem with low blood sugar, you can get it checked out at your doctor's office or buy one of those glucose monitors to confirm it.

yeah, I need to ask my doctor about this. I've always been hypoglycemic- but he usually doesn't mention it. The last two blood tests I've had, he has mentioned my blood sugar was really low. I forgot to ask for the numbers of what 'really' low meant.

I get shakey and get anxiety- I must eat a small something when I get like this. It doesn't always cure the anxiety but it helps a little and my shakes decrease. I usually find for some reason that protein helps but that doesn't make sense, sooo... I dun't know.

my daughters both get the shakes if they skip a meal.

I get really disoriented, shaky and irritable if I go too long without eating. I associate it with low blood sugar, but it has never been diagnosed as such.

Totally makes sense that protein helps.

Protein helps regulate how quickly the glucose is metabolized in your system. Protein helps regulate blood sugar.

Is it something that needs to be checked out by a doctor?? I didnt think it was a big deal, as long as I have my snacks, it doesnt usually trouble me.

Ladybug, my mother also gets really scary when she is too hungry. It is kind of funny afterward, because she goes from frothing with rage to very pleasant after just a few bites of food. :)

I'm the exact same way. I've never taken the "test" for hypoglycemia, but I'm fairly certain I have it. Others in my extended family are hypoglycemic. I am diagnosed mood disorder NOS (for now), but I do wonder how much my blood sugar levels are affecting me mood-wise, especially since I have an eating disorder as well, which doesn't help. Argh.

My blood sugar has no effect on my mood, well most things don't. The only symptoms I get when my blood sugar drops is eyesight stuff, like the room starts spinning or things go in and out of focus. Eating something always resolves that.

I don't think there is a special correlation between hypoglycemia and Mood Disorders. Being in a really shitty mood is not a mood swing. I get this, too, and become Super Bitch. As soon as I am eating, I am back to normal.

My dad (who is BP) and my sister (who is not in any way MI, just kind of a bitch) both get it. I assume there is a genetic component, but I am not sure.

It also happens a couple of hours after I eat a very sugary breakfast without any protein. Like if I have pancakes and syrup, but no eggs. So it doesn't have to even be very long since my last meal, it just has to be a big sugar swing.

I have no idea if it should be checked out by a doctor. If it causes you distress, would probably be worth asking about. If you feel like you are aware of it and can manage it on your own, well, maybe just keep an eye on it and mention it when you're there for something else?

Crtclms, that makes sense. You are right, the mood changes caused by low blood sugar are easily fixed with food, so it isnt like the bipolar mood states caused by lack of sleep. Oh if only mania could be cured by a few hours of sleep! :)
