Does taking Prozac make you gain weight?

One problem that I'm concerned with, if I start Prozac is whether or not it will make me gain weight - something that I DO NOT want!

well I can only give one view, for me, I had no libido on Prozac but I didn't gain weight at all, can't remember if I lost weight or not. ymmv

I'm currently on Lex and on that I've lost a bit of weight and my libido is either uneffected or maybe improved a bit, again ymmv

If you lost weight on celexa then you may well lose weight on prozac to, you can always stop taking it if it's not effective, yeah, the anti-d merry-go-round is a pain.

good luck

Craig

hi, i started fluoxetine(generic prozac) for the first time 6 weeks ago.

i compete in cycle racing and, even now, out of season, i train regularly(200k per week) and avoid fatty foods. i monitor my weight and bodyfat regularly. i'd heard about the possibility of weight gain on prozac, so since i got on board, i've also been running(2x40 mins sessions per week).

by week 4, i had gained 1kg. my weight then started to go down, and at the moment, after 6 weeks, i'm almost back to my original weight. phew!

do you do much exercise? if not, why not try some running or cycling? it'll help prevent any possible weight gain, and it'll make you feel better, it really does release those feel-good endorphins. ok, you might feel shitty again the next day, but it'll put you in a good place for a while, and that can't be bad.

as for sexual side effects, i noticed them before i noticed any beneficial effects from the prozac. can't get it up, don't really want to anyway sort of sums it up. however, i have found that if i try really hard - or someone else tries for me - i can get it on.

take care of yourself - i hope the prozac works for you.

When I looked on crazymeds.com it suggested that "everything but the weight gain and loss of libido" goes away with Prozac.  Crazymeds also said this about Celexa, but celexa made me really restless and I actually lost weight on it.

Quick explanation: If you are affected by loss of libido or weight gain, they won't go away with time.  That's not to say that you WILL get these.

hi beastie, no other side affects that i've noticed, but watch out with the booze. it's not strictly prohibited when you're on prozac, but it can put you in a bad place. couple of weeks ago, i got drunk, and carved my chest up with a razor blade. not good.

it took about six weeks for the prozac to kick in, which felt like an enternity. so hang on in there, brother....

I lost quite a bit of weight, but its slowly coming back.

Libido is as high as ever, ability to finish up, tho, is not so good. So I can be a bit frustrated sometimes, but I also have a lot of fun. Taking Adderall can boost it, too. Aaaaaaaaaargh!

Being depressed suppresses libido.

Concur about alcohol. Sometimes get quite depressed, temporarily, next AM. Have pretty much given it up.

I've taken Prozac off and on for 11 years, and in that time gained 75 lbs and had 0 libido or ability to 'finish up' ;)   I recently started Wellbutrin in addition to the Prozac and have lost 17lbs in 8 weeks AND my libido is back and my ability to 'finish up', too. WHEW, Finally!!

I was actually perscribed Prozac at one time to help with bingeing/purging when I was struggling with bulimia...so- if you have problems bingeing or eating large amounts of food Prozac may help. And if it does help you would probably loose weight  ;)

Like fond de jante said- watch out with the alchohol- it deff. makes you drunk much much faster- and after I combined alcohol, marijuana, and prozac one weekend I ended up OD'ing which put me in the hosptial & psych. ward for 1 week.

So just take it wisely and hope everything works out!
