Anyone taking Trazadone and Ambien together for sleep?

Recommended Posts

Plain Ambien puts me out okay, but I wake up after four or five hours. Ambien CR didn't seem to do any better for me, although I was taking a generic, and based on the varying quality of different Ambien generics, maybe I had a crappy generic version and a different one or name brand Ambien CR would work.

While trying various sleep meds, the pdoc prescribed Trazadone, which didn't seem to help much, either. Is anyone on a combo of Trazadone and Ambien (or some other combo) that works? I would like to have some new ideas to ask my pdoc about as I think my current depressive episode would be just about gone if I could get a good night's rest.

I just saw my pdoc and he okayed Trazadone plus Ambien, since I'm still only getting 4 -. 6 hours a night and basically never feel rested. He also suggested I try going back on Lunesta for a few weeks first (have some on hand) in case the Ambien has pooped out. I couldn't tell any difference when I tried Lunesta after being on Ambien for a few years, except the Lunesta leaves a bad taste (literally) the next morning.

Fingers crossed some of this will work, I'm tired of being tired!

I had good luck with combining sleep meds, whereas one alone didn't do the trick (I would get three hours, but I would normally get that without a sleep med). I used 12.5 mg Ambien CR with 15 mg Remeron, and got a solid 8 hours. I also tried the Ambien CR with 50-200 mg Seroquel, which worked, but left me with a dreadful hangover. I imagine that other combinations would also work, assuming there are no drug interaction issues. If Trazodone + regular Ambien doesn't give you enough sleep, try asking for the 12.5 mg CR version. I didn't have good luck with the 6.25 mg CR version.

I was having problems with AmbienCR pooping out on me so I got the brilliant idea to take Xanax with it.   Fortunately I told my doctor about this because....   This is not a healthy combo and she said that it can have a seriously bad reaction (Like you stop breathing) when you start mixing these two drug types.

So - its good your working with your doctor and not experimenting with combos *I'm an idiot.

I have taken trazodone with lunesta and klonopin (maybe? Don't know if I was on it at that point) and Seroquel. I have also taken trazodone with ambien and Seroquel while IP (they didn't like klonopin or lunesta there for some reason????). Now I take klonopin, Seroquel, and vistaril with lunesta as a PRN.

I hope your new combo works. It sucks to be tired all the time. I hope you feel better soon with more sleep!!

The combos I usually do are a mix of a (benzo) + a (hypnotic) or (sedating antidepressant).

The following have worked for me, in order from highly effective to moderately effective:

Rivotril (clonazepam) + Elavil (amitryptiline)

Rivotril (clonazepam) + Remeron (mirtazipine)

Ativan (lorazepam) + Remeron (mirtazipine)

Ativan (lorazepam) + Imovane (zopiclone)

Note: Before attempting to mix medication, consult with your psychiatrist first. I was given the ok by my psychiatrist to mix my medications since they were not working very well on their own (high tolerance).

Ambien screwed with me for years and I was oblivious . The black box arming so for different dosages for women should have been my first clue but that was my experience

i take lunesta and trazadone . I am out like a light in 45 minutes for at least 7 hours. But I cheat and cut the lunesta in half breaking all rules of common sense

I used Ambien for many years but in the end and while taking over 20 mg just to fall a sleep, I added Trazodone. I managed to taper down the Ambien to zero thanks to the Trazodone and feel so much better now. Ambien almost destroyed my life. I went sleepdriving, walking by night on a golf course, coming home with bruises and not remembering anything, buying a motorcycle without ever driven one...but worst of all, it made me extremely depressed during the day.

Ambien 10mg 2x per week max.

I just switched over to Seroquel 100mg and its working very well. I take it 30-45 mins before I want to sleep and it knocks me out until morning.

I've tried Lunesta. It didn't work and had a nasty metallic taste.

Trazadone didn't work either and left me with a hangover affect.

Sorry you are not sleeping! 50 mg of trazodone is a small dose. I took up to 200 mg when I was on it.  Just a heads up. But your situation might be completely different and your Dr might have different plans or meds might be interacting differently. I'm surprised a sleep med wasn't offered if you haven't slept in days. That is no good and can lead to mania for bipolar folks. I hope the trazodone helps. Did you get any sleep last night with this combo? If not I'd be calling your pdoc until you get some relief. I sleep 10 hours a night on zyprexa. I can't imagine not sleeping for days unless I were sky high manic/psychotic. No good.

i slept about 6 last night with 50 traz May try 100 tonight!

Hey if your Dr said to I'd give it a go! 6 hours is much better than 4!! Trazodone worked well for me for a long time when I had insomnia. Now I'm tired a lot mostly. Weird how things change!

6h.... is not bad. My sleep doc says 7h is the average target. Some people need more, some need less, but 7h is the general number. I average 5-7h during the week, and 7-8h on weekends, and generally do fine, unless I'm depressed. That will blow all the numbers out of the water.

I tried trazodone for sleep and all it did was make me feel weird and unsettled, it never actually put me to sleep. Seroquel caused zombie-like sedation and hangover the next day, to the point that I was continually late for work. Discontinuing Seroquel can cause rebound insomnia, and boy does that suck. I've been through that a couple of times. If you've been taking the Seroquel for a few days, I wouldn't abruptly stop it because of the rebound insomnia.

Recently my insomnia was so bad I was taking Restoril, Lunesta, and sometimes Xanax to fall asleep (not a good combo, I know) so I finally went back to my sleep doc for an adjustment. Put me on 1mg Klonopin, pdoc adjusted it to 1-2mg QHS, and my insomnia has improved greatly, to the point that after 2 weeks I really only need 0.5-1mg. My point being not that Klonopin is the solution for insomnia, but if your sleep meds aren't working, you definitely need to switch them up. Those of us with intractable insomnia react differently to sleep meds and it's an uphill battle to find something that works (for example, Ambien works about 10% of the time for me, the rest of the time, nada.)

I’ve been on seroquel and still am just cutting the dose down slowly down to 100 from 400 over 2 months. It started before this . It’s the vraylar causing it

So I am in quite a nasty situation.  Over 3 months ago I was able to kick my addiction to heroin with therapy and Suboxone. Also, I successfully got my bipolar II under control with Lithium ER 900mg and Seroquel XR 300mg.
For the last 6 weeks I am having fragmented sleep. I am able to fall asleep relatively easily only to wakeup after 2hrs.  I then go back to sleep and from then on I wake up roughly 5 times a night.
I've eliminated all caffeine from diet, I don't smoke cigarettes within 2hrs of bed and I don't watch TV or use any other screen before retiring.
My addiction specialist has tried me on
      trazadone 150mg--did nothing
      Doxepin 75-150mg--only makes me sleeoy
Ambien CR (w/ doxepin)--barely any change. I think it slightly improves the quality of sleep in between waking up.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a sleep maintenance medication?  I prone to rapid weight gain from AP's and dont want to double up as I am taking quetiapine already.
For what it's worth....my sleep hygiene is very good. I've started exercising in the morning before work.  I work as a credit analyst and sit in front of a computer from 9 to 5.  HOWEVER...my insomnia is causing me to nod off at my desk which is unacceptable.
Any tips/ideas/recommendatins are welcome. Mikl_pls I'm looking your way as you are the resident amateur psychopharmacologist. ;-)

I was on seroquel and ambien, amoung other things, and I began halucinating upon waking in the middle of the night, or in the morning, if I was really groggy, not all there when I woke.  The sleep specialist is worried this may be a sign of narcolepsy or another sleep disorder (I have other signs) but I haven't noticed it since I stopped the seroquel.  But then, I haven't slept either, except for last night.   Has anyone else on this combination had this issue?
      Thanks!
      Mel

When i was first diagnosed 2007, the meds turned my life around with a week.  Mostly because the Lunesta gave me a full night's rest for the first time in years and i finally gained some sanity. (Now I'm on Ambien, not Lunesta)
Now, my GP is telling me that even though i'm depressed most of the time, the meds are at full capacity.  This is as good as it gets.  He  wants me to get into cognitive therapy, but i"ve gone that route with limited success.  He increased my Seroquel but that triggered so much dizziness that i ended up in the ER. Back down to 400mg Seroquel.
I had a major set-back in early 2013.  Went catatonic and was hospitalized for 3 weeks.  No hospitalizations since that time, but I'm always worried that i could end up in the hospital again. I have never gone off meds even when i felt better.  I have accepted that I have this disorder and will be on medication for life.
So what does one do when you felt like normal, functional person but slowly digressed into a dark place?  I am so tired of battling this.  I have days where the depression is lifted, but it always returns. And I'm so tired of not knowing from one day to the next how I will be.  My life is really crappy right now.

Please help me figure out the right Med combo.. Since starting some of these meds I feel fear not my usual anxiety just flat out fear over nothing. I also have a nauseas stomach EVERY day. I feel stuck and lost since I'm no doc but maybe somebody will know what to do!
I am desperately trying to find a medication that completely cures my anxiety like Xanax but still gives me focus and energy like Adderall
I take both, but adderall heightens my anxiety at times, makes me cry sometimes for no apparent reason and occasionally I'm told makes me testy. It gives me focus and energy.. The Xanax alone makes me very calm, collected, and FINALLY quiets my fast moving thoughts and anxiety  however it gives me absolutely zero energy or motivation.
      I am perscribed daily:
40mg of Paxil aka Peroxotine  (I take at night)
70mg Adderall daily (30mg extened release /40mg amphetone salt tabs)
      50mg Trazadone (nightly)
        UNPERSCRIBED MEDICATION
Hydrocodone either 7.5mg or 10mg roughly 6 a day for knee and back pain
I suffer with debilitating anxiety over seemingly tedious tasks.. Highly unmotivated feel almost frozen sometimes. so I take roughly 4/5 .25mg Xanax a day when possible or 4/5 1 mg Ada van throughout the day as well as night.
Xanax and adderall work well I guess but I really feel like its Mesing up my stomach somehow.
Lastly I've heard a lot of things about Paxil is it dangerous? I have no sex drive upset stomachs etc
      please help!!

      Hello!

Erectile, libido, and orgasm disorders are very common when taking SSRI or SSNI drugs. This reduces quality of life, and can cause secondary depression.

I wish to find a way to manage my psychological ailments, while retaining normal sexual function.

Background: I have anxiety disorder and mild depression. My first SSRI/SSNI was Cymbalta. It worked very well. However, after a few years, I realized I had erectile dysfunction. I am no longer on Cymbalta.

Why is there hope? There is anecdotal evidence from various sources, which state at least limited success with various drugs, herbal supplements, or combinations of both. For example, Wellbutrin is reported to ease depression symptoms without causing ED (erectile dysfunction).

Plan: I intend to try various solutions, and report success or failure in this thread. Also, everyone is more than welcome to post their own experiences, both male and female. (While women don't suffer from 'ED', they do experience delayed orgasm, no orgasm, and reduced libido).

Baseline: I am currently on 10MG of Brintellix. This is the highest dose I have found that keeps me from experiencing ED.  Note: This is a "half dose". The usual Brintellix dose is 20MG. Because I am on a half-dose, my anxiety/depression feels "half managed". I need something more to fully treat my psychological conditions. This is the purpose of adding supplementary drugs or herbs to my regimen.

Methodology: I will try various substances, in combination with the baseline dose of Brintellix. I will weigh 'morning erections' more heavily than other erections, to rule out the possibility of psychological issues affecting ED. (This concept is supported by my Psychiatrist).

      Tried so far:

      For ED:
      Horny Goat Weed
Viagra (This of course works very well for ED. It is also insanely expensive, it requires pre-planning because it takes at least 30 minutes to work, and it can wear off in as little as four hours.)

      For Depression/Anxiety:
      Magnesium

      Currently Trying:

      For ED:
      Yohimbe (Click for Wikipedia article)
L-arginine & Pycnogenol (Click for clinical study)
      Exercise

      For ED & Depression/Anxiety:
      Trazodone (Click for clinical study)

I am very tired right now, so I will fill in more information tomorrow about the things I have tried, and the things I am currently on.
