What do you do when you can't remember if you took your medication?

10 posts in this topic

I've actually ran into this problem quite a few times. My general rule is if I can't remember if I took it or not then that means I didn't take it or else I would remember it right? So usually in this situation I just take it anyways even if unsure. But it does seem dangerous if I'm wrong but I just haven't been able to come up with a better plan of action. What do you all do when in this situation? And yes I know this can be avoided with a pill box but I am not really interested in the hassle.

When I found myself asking this question (of myself) frequently is when I decided it wasn't as much of a hassle as I thought to use a pillbox. It also means that I don't have to sort through pill bottles every day twice a day, just once a week. Less of a hassle than I thought and comes with not having to worry about taking a double dose and running out of a controlled substance too soon for a refill.

The other thing I do that helps is I keep a very strict routine. Not just on weekdays (workdays), but weekends as well. So I can be fairly confident that I took my meds if I fed the dog in the morning, or brushed my teeth in the evening. If you can tie it to another action you always do at around the same time, that helps.

Some people have service animals who help them remember, i.e. a dog who brings them their medication bottles, or signals it's time for meds.

I got really bad about remembering mine, and I can't afford to have a dog trained for that (and the other things I'd need) so I put an app on my phone. I picked the most annoying notification sound, and it goes off every FIVE minutes until I confirm I took my medicine. I knew it would work, and it has.

You have to be careful, depending on the med that's dangerous.

I turn the pill bottle upside down when I take my morning dose, and then turn it right side up when I take my night time dose. For meds I only take once a day, I do the same thing, but I make sure to readjust those bottles when I take my night meds. PRNs I don't worry about, because a little extra or less won't hurt me. I've used pull boxes before, but I can never stick to them. If I screw up and don't know whether I've taken meds or not, I generally just skip them.

For some of my meds, I daily lay them all out near me .. so they are in plain sight.  If they are gone, I know I've taken them.

If Idk whether I have taken any of my meds (generally speaking), I usually don't take them, and wait until the next day.  By then I can usually tell if I starting to not feel myself, and know I might have missed a couple/few doses.  So I go by that.  I don't double up, just if I don't feel quite right I take the pill because chances are I haven't taken it for a day or 2.

I rotate my bottles.

I've got two that I take in the morning and one that I take at night, three bottles in total of daily meds. If I've taken my meds, I put them in the back as the sign that I've taken them. That way the "next up" bottle is the next thing I need to take.

If I'm unsure if I've taken my morning meds, I wait a couple of hours before taking them again. It's usually abundantly clear by then.

Also seconding the use of pill boxes. When I had a lot more regularly scheduled daily meds, I used a pill box and filled it once a week. Mine was one of the big size with compartments for AM/PM since those were my main dosing times. Everything else was PRN (as needed).

I also had a watch attached to Nugget's collar when I had a hard time remembering to take meds on time. It was a digital, several alarm-capable watch. She was trained to pester me until I turned the watch off and gave her a treat, and the dog treats stayed near the meds so I'd have the visual cue to take them.

Come to think of it, I still keep the dog treats near the meds because Nugget has morning eye drops and she gets a treat for each eye every morning (plus a "treats for good dogs" song).

Fortunately I can't sleep without my bight meds and take my stimulant in the am. Both am and pm have meds I would notice if I missed.

@Flash I really like the idea of flipping the med bottles over in the morning/evening. I have a phone alarm, which works great for the evenings, but finding a time that aligns with my morning schedule is tricky and sometimes in the morning I'll turn it off by accident without taking my meds or such.

I have a pill box but even then I still don't always remember (usually happens when I haven't refilled the pill box yet, I'm a space cadet). I take the pill if I can't remember taking it, the same as you. I have no idea if I have ever actually taken more than one pill by accident, but I've definitely missed my pill several times...I'm amazed it's still even doing anything at this point. 😳

I tried to calculate how many pills I should have left vs how many I did, and figure out that way if I had taken that day's
