Xanax quiets my mind, but doesn't make me sleepy. But that's just me.
This is from Jerod's article on benzos on the Crazy Meds site:
QUOTE
While popular as a sleep aid, tolerance to them builds up quickly for a lot of people. They're great for occasional insomnia, but you're probably better off looking into something else if you can't get to sleep every night. Some people can take them every night for as a sleep aid. Keep in mind that the sedation thing is a side effect and is expected to go away with continued use.
Have you tried any of the non-benzo hypnotics? Sonata... Ambien... and the newly released Lunesta? Of the three, Ambien works the best for me. Except when it doesn't - but during those times, not much does.
They can be habit-forming (I think that's the right word), but that can be broken fairly quickly and easily. They are not addictive, unlike benzos (Xanax, Klonopin, etc.). Less likely to cause depression, too. Lunesta is the only one FDA approved for long-term use, but there are lots of folks here (myself included) that have been on Ambien long-term with no apparent ill effect.

P.S. Whatever you do, don't take immediate release Xanax and Ambien at the same time. Unless you enjoy major hallucinations, that is! I assume this applies to other combinations of immediate release benzos and hypnotics, as well.
