Look, I'm an atheist. All organized (and unorganized) religion seems absurd to me, for a multitude of reasons. It seems to me that if everyone was raised by scientifically-literate parents, and not told about religion until critical thinking skills were fully developed (twenty-one?), that religion would disappear from this world. However, I see it's value in comforting people. I would greatly appreciate that comfort. So do me a favor and convince me!
I just wanted to share this beautiful, smart, often hilarious, and deeply personal monologue, by comedian/author Julia Sweeney (of Saturday Night Live fame), for those who may be interested and haven't heard it before. It is about her long, intense spiritual journey from a Catholic upbringing, to a desperate search for spiritual and philosophical meaning, and finally to her coming to a realization, an acceptance, and a reverence of the deeply mysterious natural universe we inhabit, with no creator or deity presiding over it, and how this realization has made her a more compassionate and engaged person. I find it to be really, truly moving and inspiring. It is rather long, but WELL worth a listen. http://youtu.be/ri3-DpSn7AA If you've already heard it, what are your thoughts?
