  1. So, I went to see my GP to talk about possibly switching from Prozac to something else. I am not sure if my Prozac is pooping out or if it just normal life stressors getting to me. So, I discussed this with him and he had me do some genetic testing to see if I metabolize psychiatric meds normally. I got the results back, and apparently the only abnormal thing is that I have a gene mutation that makes me unable to metabolize folic acid properly, so he prescribed something called Deplin, generic version L-Methylfolate 15mg. With insurance coverage it is $56 a month!! I am wondering if anyone has had noticeable, positive results from this before I drop $56 on basically a pharmaceutical grade vitamin. I am thinking that maybe I should just go back to seeing a therapist and not go on the med merry-go-round again, since Prozac is still working and life is not so bad to warrant a huge medication change. Maybe possibly going from Prozac 20mg to 30mg? Since 40mg had benefits but I was WAYYYYYYYY too fatigued all the time. Another thing I want to inquire about is possibly augmenting Prozac with Wellbutrin. I had been on Wellbutrin 150mg XL 4 years ago, and I think I liked it but it made me VERY irritable. The difference then is that that was my main antidepressant, second one being Remeron 15mg, but that was mostly for sleep. I am wondering maybe the Prozac has leveled me out more so I will not be as irritable from the Wellbutrin. Anyone had success with an SSRI + Wellbutrin? Thank you all.
  2. I found an old thread on Deplin but thought I would start this to see if anyone has been taking it. It's supposed to be a form of folate that crosses the blood-brain barrier and is only available by prescription, and my pdoc just gave me some samples to start. Apparently not everyone metabolizes folate correctly and Deplin is supposed to help. It's approved to as an augmentation for depression treatments. I'm interested in any and all experiences on it, as well as the cost, because from reading elsewhere it seems that it may not be covered by insurance and might be expensive (haven't priced it myself yet).
  3. Hola, Has anyone tried BOTH ($30) methylpro and ($58) deplin and have a review of efficacy for each? My pdoc literally just called me and said he's tired making people pay twice the price deplin charges, and wanted me to post, bless his soul. Bless my soul I am a mania and mixed episode monster and cannot be the guinea pig for this SSRI booster. Gracias
  4. Hi, My dad has suffered from depression for a very long time (and possibly also bipolar). Unfortunately he will not share his diagnosis with any of his family members. He had tried every combination of antidepressants, but nothing seemed to work. Last year he started to take Deplin and his depression greatly improved, although the Deplin seems to have heightened everything about his personality and at times he seems manic. In recent months he's become irritable and verbally abusive to his closest family members and most recently started to become physically abusive, pushing my mother during an argument. I've known my dad all his life and he has never had any abusive tendencies. He gave me multiple long lectures as a kid about how it was never right to put your hands on a women, yet he's done a complete 180 in the last year. I fear that the Deplin (which is the one thing that has pulled him out of his depression) is now causing him to act irrationally and have increased irritability and anger. He's recently stopped going to his pdoc and continues to tell everyone how Deplin has cured him, yet his family members know a very different story. I'm looking for anyone who has had any similar experiences with Deplin and any general advice anyone can give. I certainly don't want him to go off the Deplin and spiral into depression, but I fear if he continues to take it that he'll do serious damage to his relationships with myself and others. Thanks to anyone who has read this. I'm hopeful my family can figure this out and we can get him back to a place of stability.
  5. Just sitting here debating on trying Deplin. The normal panic disorder ritual before putting any drug into my body! Really need a boost to the Zoloft and klonopin.
  6. Hello- I am a 43yearold male. Lifetime serious depression. Have been taking 15mg daily Deplin for a few weeks now (many years on Zoloft w/o much benefit). Anyway I really cannot say if the Deplin is working because I have been trying to taper down off of Suboxone at the same time (2 years Suboxone total, 6mg for the last year before tapering). Well I am right now in the middle of the HELL of Suboxone withdrawal (day 2) and am wondering if I should skip or take the Deplin. A lot of people complain it makes them energetic or anxious, and that is the last thing I need right now as I am going out of my skin with anxiety, depression, major Suboxone withdrawal. I already feel like I'm going to die and don't want to take anything that could make it worse, but also don't want to skip Deplin if it could help. Just looking for any advice...THANK YOU VERY MUCH
  7. There was an article in the Jan. 3, 2012 Wall Street Journal (page D3), "Giving Antidepressants a Boost With a Vitamin"; you may be able to view it by following this link. Otherwise use this link and it should the the top news story on Google News (which should then link it to you for free at the WSJ website). Anyhow, the article was about using L-methylfolate, the active form of folate (and folic aicd), as a supplement to antidepressants. L-methylfolate is needed to produce serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. L-methylfolate is available as a prescription as a "medical food" called Deplin, manufactured by Pamlab. Two dosage forms - 7.5 mg and 15 mg (which if you do a little research, you'll find are huge doses compared to usual folate supplementation). I did find a supplement sold as a health food, with each capsule being 1000 mcg (or 1 mg) - so you'd have to take 15 of them. :-( But wait, there's more. Research has shown that some people have a genetic mutation that reduces their ability to make L-methylfolate. The gene is MTHFR and the mutation is 677 C-->T (i.e., a T is substituted for C at position 677). Roughly 30% of the population has one abnormal copy (heterozygous) and 12% has two abnormal copies (homozygous). If you have two abnormal copies, your body synthesizes less than 1/3 of the typical amount of L-methylfolate. So I downloaded a bunch of research papers on L-methylfolate and depression, and MTHFR and depression. It'll take me a few days to go through them. I'll let you know what I think when I'm done reviewing them. If you want to find these papers, you can go to Google Scholar and search for "L-methylfolate depression" and "MTHFR depression".
