Hi,

Have any of you had or have read of gabapentin being of use as an adjunctive therapy for people with treatment resistant depression/anxiety/bipolar?

I have been doing research and some sources say it helps, others say there is no strong clinical proof. I think a lot of the conflicting reports I have seen has to do with it simply not being studied en mass.

Any advice/experiences regarding this? If so, what was your dosing?

Thank you!

troop

That is from the Mayo clinic and is a perfect example of the conundrum I have found myself in.

Off label use versus actual intended use, ... no large-scale studies for off-label use for treatment resistant bipolar depression, anxiety, etc. Most sources are anecdotal.

People have sworn by it, such as the person who wrote above. Yet many people report cognitive mood enhancement and lessened anxiety when using this medication. With conflicting reports and with the Mayo Clinic, a highly respected institution, releasing their own versions, who is to be believed?

I don’t think Gabapentin use in anxiety is that rare, especially in cases where the goal is to avoid using a benzo.... lots of people on here use it for anxiety

for bipolar, the evidence is thinner (but not non existent)

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11249802/
this is a study of its use in bipolar which was placebo controlled but for mania/mixed where it didn’t do well

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12781355/
and this one says it’s helpful where there is comorbid anxiety or substance use ... which are two things (as mentioned above) where it’s use is more common.

this article seems to agree with the masses that anxiety and substance use disorders have more evidence.

I took it for anxiety and it didn’t do anything magical but I was also loaded up on benzos so it would have been tough for me to tell anyway.... regardless, @notloki is totally right. Meds get used off label alllllll the time, that alone shouldn’t be the deciding factor

Thank you for your response! I am loaded on Valium and other meds, so I can't really tell either. I'm taking 100mg 3x/day. What dose did you take?

I'm SZA, bipolar.  For me, it's mild, but it's still noticeable.  It's not the same as when I was taking benzos, but it was reportedly better for me to be off of them.  I take 600mg in the morning and 800mg in the evening (it helps with sleep too).  I'm hoping to decrease the dose at some point.

But yes, if it works for you, it's worth taking--and it's worth trying if you're looking for something to help with anxiety.  It definitely seems to be hit or miss (there are people who can't tolerate it).  But it's not a stretch/far out there option.
