does cymbalta cause weight gain

Recommended Posts

My think it's supposed to be weight neutral, but I'm not sure. Maybe someone else has the hard facts?

I was on it several months, maybe 5 or 6? (Didn't do anything for my depression.) I actually lost weight while I was on it, but I'm sure that was due to the fact I was: 1) recovering from surgery; 2) developed a rare infection; 3) was on a ton of antibiotics; and 4) from all that had severe nausea and lack of appetite.

Bottom line: don't think my weight loss was at all related to cymbalta.

Hopefully, someone will come along who knows more.

PS - You might want to re-post this in the Non-SSRI Antidepressants forum. Cymbalta is a Non-SSRI antidepressant.

blackbunny19:

I did a search of the PI for Cymbalta. The PI is downloadable here: http://cymbalta.com/index.jsp - the "Prescribing Information" link is on the bottom left of the page.

This is what the search turned up:

=====================================================

Weight Changes

In MDD placebo-controlled clinical trials, patients treated with Cymbalta for up to 9-weeks experienced a mean weight loss of approximately 0.5 kg, compared with a mean weight gain of 0.2 kg in placebo-treated patients.

In DPN placebo-controlled clinical trials, patients treated with Cymbalta for up to 13-weeks experienced a mean weight loss of approximately 1.1 kg, compared with a mean weight gain of 0.2 kg in placebo-treated patients.

=====================================================

So, it appears that if anything Cymbalta causes some weight loss. (Maybe it actually did contribute to mine, if only slightly?)

i'm suppose to be starting cymbalta soon. But im worried about weight gain side effects. Has anyone gained weight from this drug?

thanks

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I have gained weight while on this drug, but it has been from FOOD not cymbalta. I'm a emotional eater. I haven't heard any reports of Cymbalta being a weight gaining drug, in fact the opposite for most.

I can testify to it's efficacy. It raised my from near suicide, (locked up in nuthouse), to just blah. Which is not optimal, but we're still working on it.

The only s/e I had was mild heart racing in the beginning, but it went away after I'd been on it a few weeks. I still take it, 60 mgs. per day. For me, it worked almost overnight. I really needed the norepenephine re-uptake inhibition, apparently.

Go for it! and good luck!
