Antihistamine Stimulating?

Recommended Posts

A couple drugs, Remeron and Seroquel, which both have anithistamine effects, are somewhat stimulating for me at low doses. With Remeron I don't think it's the norepinephrine at the low dose. Does this happen to anyone else? Are there sleep drugs that sedate without the antihistamine effect other than benzos?

i think i'm noticing this now, after i took a claritin and some benadryl yesterday.  or it could just be the allergic response itself that's doing it to me (or i absorbed too much thyroid hormone today . . . it's always a fun guessing game with me) but i think i definitely overdid it on the antihistamine, and now i feel pretty wired.  and not in a good way at all.  i have no idea what the neurochemistry explanation would be - but i've definitely had a few bad run ins with drugs containing any kind of anti-histamine before.

although technically the anti-histamine effect of seroquel is what's SUPPOSED to make you sleepy.  somebody want to jump in here and explain it all?

I don't understand it either, I thought Benadryl was to make you sleepy, thought it use to help me some.

All the RX meds I tried such as Ambien, and Lunesta did not work for me.

So, other night I took two Benadryls the real thing, just straight pink and white caps nothing else in them, my allergies are acting up, and I just could not sleep.

It was worse night ever, I was truly wired!

Does anyone know explanation, I truly fear Benadryl now, along with so many other meds.

well my friend was saying that benadryl acts like an ssri, but i don't have a whole lot to back that up, or explain how. but that could be at least partly responsible for the effects we've noticed.  although i gotta expect the histamine/antihistaminergical (am i making that word up) properties effect some other system in the body or the brain.  all i know is being on antihistamines - while maybe keeping the allergies in check - don't seem to do a whole lot for my sanity either.

Well it made me feel like being on an ssri, so your friend could really have something there.

I know I am staying away from them to be safe.

I hope my doctor knows more when ask him, sometimes it seem as though we know more about the meds here.

I was told to have best of all wolds you really need a Tdoc that is also a pharmocologist, is I got that right?

But really has the study of all pharmeuceuticals sp? as in post grad work and degree.

You would think they would all have that now, with so many chemicals and adverse effects, so we do not have to go thru possibly as much hell just trying everything.
