freesoul
I have a couple of weeks off school and I'm thinking of doing a fast. I used to do this about once a year pre-medications etc, just to purify and as a spiritual experience as well. It made me feel better, broke up the monotomy and I usually lost a few a pounds as well. And it may stop my recent ,migraines, it did once before. I drank a lot of water during them, stayed active and sometimes drank herbal teas as well. I go it for 5-10 days. I'm not sure about the meds issue though...purification will not be possible on those things. And, well, does anyone know if there may be issues? has anyone done it? Penny Century
talk to your doctor. i don't know what medications you are on, but fasting can alter the levels of medication in your blood which can lead to serious problems. fasting on meds is a whole different game than not on meds. you have to be really careful, and you have to ask your doctor before you do it. penny
wifezilla
Instead of a total fast, could you just do raw foods for 5-10 days? It might give you the cleansing you want without messing up your meds.
Iona_Viona
i agree talk to your doc, i personally dont think fasting is a good idea at any time (coming from someone with an eating disorder) but talk to your doc about how it will impact your meds, you might end up making yourself feel a lot worse. i like wifezillas suggestion about the raw foods. maybe just avoid processed foods etc.
Catnapper
I would have to chime in with another vote for the raw foods crowd. While researching cleansing out my highly polluted digestive tract (too much chocolate and other refined foods!), I came to the conclusion that raw foods were better than no foods, at least for getting toxins out. The reasoning I found on several sites was that raw foods will cause your digestive tract to continue moving, maybe more than usual if you eat too much crap like me. The raw foods moving through will help break loose all the gunk that needs to get cleaned out, where if you fast on just liquids, your bowels will basically stop, so although you won't add any more toxins during your fast, you'll only eliminate them through your kidneys, which is helpful, but not the whole source of the problem. I've done the raw foods for just a few days at a time and I definitely felt better, and if I had good sense I'd eat that way most of the time. But I don't have good sense, that's why I'm here.... And as others have pointed out, if you're going to go with no food at all, definitely give the pdoc a call to see about adjusting dosages, or if it's even something to undertake. The drugs are supposed to be for your head, but needless to say they're messing with your whole body and fasting may be a bad idea altogether. celestia
Raw foods = nature's broom. I like that idea, I should do that. Hey, F.S., I'm following you around! Hugs, S9

Then again, I'm not on anticonvulsants, benzos, or mood stabilizers either. (And it's 25 hours tops) If it's just a matter of water, but no food, you'd have to watch to make *sure* your fluid intake keeps up. Once the body hits the fat stores and muscle protein for energy, the load on the kidneys goes up. You'll definitely want to talk to your doctor ahead of time, esp. if you're on one of the several meds that affect blood sugar levels or risk of diabetes. freesoul
Thanks to all of you for replying. Yes, I guess I will talk to my dr. I am on 2 anticonvulsant (lamictal + tegretol) and the prn zyprexa and benzo cause of running around hypo too much these days. I assume raw foods consist of uncooked fruit and vegetables? I never heard of that kind of cleanse. It sounds interestesting...it's probably just as good or better...except that as catnapper pointed out, in an actual fast your insides stop moving, leading to a total lack of appetite after the third day or so! practical I'd welcome any more info on the raw food option
wifezilla
There are a lot of people who are "hard core" in to raw foods and never eat anything else. Honestly, I could never live like that all the time (no PIZZA? GET REAL!). But I do think it is a good idea to eat as many fresh fruits and veggies as possible. (Especially berries...keep hearing more and more good stuff about berries). Here is a link that lists the pro and cons of this type of diet.... http://www.ivillage.co.uk/dietandfitness/e..._598387,00.html But doing a raw food diet for 5-10 days at a time sounds very practical to me...especially since you are on meds like lamictal. Maybe print out that article when you talk to your doc??
