Tenebrae
oh god yes, i tried it and it was soooooo boring going around in circles over and over again to bad music. it might be good for ocd dxs though because of the repetition. totally no addition if you already have a gym membership. Dee
Just make sure you a comfortable politically with where the membership money may actually go. http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2004/apr/04043005.html You will find articles stating "Gary Heavin" does in fact fund pro-life organizatons, and others where he denies it. Personally, I'd rather give my money to another gym and not risk it.
wifezilla
My neighbor did curves and lost 70 lbs. She also did the Curves diet at the same time she started working out. After a couple of months of her going to the gym and doing so well, they hired her. But I really don't think you need a Curves membership if you already belong to a gym. Why not just buy yourself a nice video iPod so you can listen to what ever music you like (or even watch a tv show). Personally, I can't work out without my iPod...its SOOOOO BORING without it. sepia
The owner of Curves does fund pro-life initiatives with his own margin of the profits. Curves the organization does not. Bear this fine distinction in mind if you are concerned about where money will go. My mother liked Curves, but then her workplace built an employee gym. She dropped her membership immediately. I think it's a nice concept for ladies who would never get their ass to the gym otherwise, but if you're already working out, you'll likely be bored out of your skull. Still, if you feel you need a more supportive environment, it might be good for you. Every location has its own vibe.
Croix
I actually worked at Curves for a while. The job was ok, but I didn't like the workout. Hydrolic machine, jog on square board, hydrolic machine, jog on square board, over and over. Two times around the circle. B o r i n g! And I didn't like the machines at all. You WON'T find weights there. And when you sign up, you MUST give them your checking acct. number so they can pull the money out if you miss a payment. (At least at the one I worked at, but I think they're all the same in that regard.) I know they're franchised out, but most of the how-tos are the same and come from the top. Corp, by the way, is in Texas. Waco. No surprise there. Big ole christian, republican corp. Just so you know. If you already have a gym membership, I'd stick with it. Waaaaaaay more options at a regular gym. Croix
Iona_Viona
i called the lady up today to ask if i could get a tour and she was SO rude to me on the phone. she asked what time i wanted to take a tour and i told her and she said i couldnt come at that time because that is when they are busy,. i told her because of my work schedule that was the only time i could go and she very rudely said "well when do u plan on being able to work out" i was like " at that time" so she reluctantly made an appointment to show me around at that time. but because i am a borderline bitch and she was so rude im just not going to rock up. so i guess that answered my own question!!! thanks for your input everyone! Croix
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that, it's been awhile. The workers get commission for every new member they sign up. So they're going to try to get you to agree to come in on their particular shift. They're not worried about your schedule, they're worried about theirs. The shifts are weird cuz Curves closes for 2-3 hours in the middle of the day. The workers are split into morning and evening shifts, so everyone works parttime. No fulltime wages paid here. Minimum. They NEED that commission. That's why you got attitude. I worked there for three whole weeks before I said Fuck all this. Croix
dianebea
I joined a Curves a few years ago and kept my membership for 2 years. I think I lost 10 lbs. It IS very boring. Plus, it's kind of gross because you go on a machine right after someone else gets off it---yuck! I am easily grossed out by smells. Is there a Women's Workout World near you? Their memberships are cheaper and they have much more variety. I have a membership there now (that I don't use, however). dianebea
Iona_Viona
thanks for your suggestiongs, my gym has a ladies only section with a circut of weight machines in that i am planning on trying out tomorrow AM before work. (thats if i can drag my lazy ass out of bed) its not that i am really shy of training infront of the guys its just the gym i go to is always really busy and when i use the weights and i can see that there is a guy waiting to use it i kinda feel like the weaker one should give up there spot. i know that is silly but oh wells. i will let u know if i manage to get out of bed! ncc1701
Heya IV, I'm clearly pro-choice. My mom had a heart attack 10 years ago. She is so, so, so healthy now b/c of lifestyle changes *plus Curves.* Still won't join myself. But no *way* am I going to dissuade her. Do what works. And. If idiots at the gym are more interested in their own muscles than with sharing machines, oh well. I learned to speak their language. It's not a very complicated language. --ncc--
Loon-A-TiK
I'm not comfortable politically about what the owner does with his money. When I did go to Curves, before I found out about his Pro Life support, I found it to be BORING. Machine (sweaty, smelly), square thing to march in place, machine, square, for 1/2 hour. Then some stretching. I did it because the Curves was in the same building as my office and I could just go over on my lunch. I initially lost about 5 lbs but was so bored that I never worked-it, so I maintained my weight and it wasn't so worth it. I lost weight when I started running in the metropark. THAT worked. It can be as fun as you make it. Pick a landmark you want to make it to in a certain time, put new music on an ipod, change-up your workout clothes, treat yourself to new shoes, whatever. I like running because you create your own excitement, and there need not be repetition and boring+stupid+weird music. LOL
