chsjohn
Hello everyone....first time poster here. I've found this board very useful as I've struggled with some issues of late. I'm going to ask the short version of my question so as not to tax anyone's patience (more details available on request). Is it common practice to combine two different AD's to counteract side-effects? I think I'm about to be put on Wellbutrin, but I'm ALREADY a raging insomniac and I'm afraid this will make things a lot worse. Would taking the Wellbutin XL in the a.m. and a sedating AD like Trazodone or Doxepin before bed help me? Would a Pdoc commonly do something like this? FYI, the sexual side effects of some of the other ADs have been a problem for me. Hence landing on the Wellbutrin.....I just need to be sure I can also get some sleep. I know Remeron is also an option, as it's good for sleep and allegedly doesn't harm libido, but I can't afford to gain 50 lbs! I would be very grateful for any perspective! Best Regards, John

Bianca
Before I first started Prozac a long time ago I was already taking trazadone for sleep. Then I was put on prozac and couldn't have orgasms, so we added 150mg of WB. That counteracted the side effects. So in actuality I was on 3 ADs. Even though traz really isn't rx as an AD anymore. Now that I've been on the combo of Cymbalta and 300mg of WB and .5mg klonopin 3 times per day I have no issues falling asleep. I sometimes miss my 2nd and 3rd dose of klonopin b/c I don't need it for sleep or just plain forget about it.
lasinia
yeah, it seems pretty common for doc's to hand out a new med for side effects. never tried welbutrin because I've had a seizure disorder in the past, but definately have had some sleep probs. Tried trazadone, it made me sleepy but still couldn't get my mind to shut up. If that's your case you might wanna ask your doc about seroquel or other anti psychotics used for sleep. Seroquel works like a charm for me (also helps with some anxiety I have, I guess getting my mind to shut up hehe) I guess just make sure you know the facts about what your taking. Not all docs are as smart as they think they are. One insisted I take welbutrin to help me quit smoking and combat the depression even after I told him about my seizure disorder. I switched docs. Bianca
the klonopin I take regularly helps with my sleep. But after being on Cymbalta and WB for so long you get use to it and sometimes I fall asleep without taking it
dianebea
My antidepressants include 300mg WB XL in the am and 75-100mg trazodone at night for sleep. I also take 75 mg of effexor in the morning. I took Doxepin for sleep and it worked pretty well---but I had to keep increasing the dosage---it also is dangerous if you're suicidal, as I was. dianebea
trg247
I currently take four AD's, effexor, remeron, wellbutrin and trazodone, and it worked pretty well fo a while. Trazodone has pretty much stopped working and will be changed at my next appointment, hopefully remeron as well. The big thing with combining AD's is whatrvrt it takes to get stable and stay that way take care trg247
