Sleeping Patterns

Recommended Posts

Hi! Can I ask for some advice? I hope this is OK.

Lately my sleeping pattern has been completely messed up. I've gone from bed between midnight and 9am to bed between 3am and 10am. I feel alot more tired recently too. I just can't sleep and when I do go to bed my brain decides to wake up and think about so many things. Does this mean or indicate anything?

I don't know if this is the right board to post this question on, but I wasn't sure so I thought I would stick to here

:embarassed: :embarassed: :embarassed:

hello. again. ;)

I'm not sure of your diagnosis(ses?), but I have major depression and lack of sleep is usually indicative of an "episode" coming on. I'll get better, sleep when I'm supposed to, and then slowly things start happening. I'll go to sleep later (I'm in school with pretty forceful parents so it's still only around ten or eleven, but usually it's nine thirty or so) and become absolutely exhausted during the day.

weird sleep patterns, for me, is a sign of me getting depressed again. and, again, I'm not sure of your diagnosis, but if you have depression in any form, maybe it's an indicator? I would definitely talk to your doctor, though.

good luck~

Hello!! ;)

I don't know what my diagnosis, if any, would be. I've heard it may be a sign of some form of depression before though. I spoke to my doctor and he referred me to a counsellor that I haven't seen. Hopefully it will go back to normal soon/eventually. The only problem is that when I try to go to sleep, my brain wakes up.....

What techniques do you use to help yourself get to sleep/make yourself more tired at night?

I hope you are sleeping OK at the moment.

Thanks.

Hello!!

I am going to the doctors tomorrow to ask him about it and see if I can get any sleeping pills. Even if I don't leave there with a prescription, I'll at least have received some good advice (hopefully). I will talk to the counsellor about it too regardless of whether the pills or advice help or don't. I haven't been to see her *yet* because she didn't bother calling and the receptionist was too thick to understand relaying a simple message to the right person. I'm speaking to her next week :) Are you experiencing messy sleeping patterns at the moment? How do you focus yourself to get to sleep? I hope you're sleeping and feeling OK at the moment. Thanks!! xxx

Having screwed up sleeping patterns is definitely a sign of slippage for me. I have major depressive disorder, recurrent, and dysthymia, which is a sort of low-level depression that never really goes away but isn't incapacitating like an episode of major depression is.

My depression is also of the atypical variety which means when I'm depressed I sleep and eat too much. The more usual variety of depression often causes people to wake up in the middle of the night and then not be able to get back to sleep. In all forms of depression, and I think the other mood disorders like bipolar as well, but don't quote me, whatever sleep you do get is screwed up and you don't get into the deep sleep that you need to feel rested. That's why I can sleep all day and night and still feel tired.

As far as what I do to fall asleep, like my other kitty friends, I basically lay down! B) I think it was Abraham Lincoln that said cats may suffer from many different ailments, but no one has ever observed them having insomnia.

I usually read before I sleep. I've also found that if I can get myself to exercise pretty hard earlier in the day I'll generally get a good night's sleep, even if I'm depressed and haven't been getting much restful sleep. I hope the doc is able to help you and/or refer you to a good pdoc if necessary.

admittedly, most of the time when I'm having a sleeping problem, I just get out of bed and do something. even if it means no chance of going back to sleep, I can at least feel like I'm being constructive about it.

I also have an imagination x 10, so when I do need to sleep, I tend to get in bed and make up stories that I either live through or I guide someone else through. it's quite fun, actually, until they get scary. x_x but that usually gets me to sleep, and if it doesn't it at least amuses me. ;) music is also very important to me, because, having synesthesia (seeing sounds, hearing colors), I can just close my eyes and it's a light show, right there. but that might not work for you, I dunno.

keep an eye out for other signs, too. be safe!

I'm sleeping lots and deeply at the moment cos of the Zyprexa, but when I'm finding it difficult to sleep I count in my head. Know it sounds a bit weird, but counting up to 100 repeatedly seems to bore my brain into going to sleep....!
