Seroquel "Poop-out" after Three Weeks?!?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else ever had Seroquel (or any atypical) suddenly stop working, or stop working once you increased your dose? Is it known to do this, ever?

I went from tapering onto it (12.5 mg half-pill a night) to 25 mg per night; and ever since I went up to 25, all my obsessions, compulsions, tics, vocalizations and sleeping problems have all come back. It's also not controlling the migraines it used to prevent so well on 12.5.

Is this heard-of? What now? It worked so well, and I just do not tolerate SSRIs or Anafranil (clomipramine) at all. This med was my last shot. Now what? Does Risperdal do anything much for OCD or tics?

That does is next to nothing.

APs take time to work anyway. While at first they have a calming effect, they don't kick in for disordered thought until you've been on them for a few weeks. At the dose you're on it's basically a sleeping pill. You're taking it for the side effects. Like any med, the side effects get better after a while.

Seroquel did nothing for my OCD until around the 100mg mark. At a dose much higher than that it started to counteract my ADD meds so that where I kept it for a couple years.

Even that is considered a small dose. 800 is the max recommended dose.

You've got a lot of room left to go.

I have tics related to my OCD as well. Where most people would do a ritual type thing, I tic, pretty much. The only thing that's helped with that been topamax. Seroquel kicked ass for anxiety, obsessions, and intrusive thoughts though.

Yes I have to agree with the other posters.

Your dose is so small any benefit is likely to be a placebo effect. FYI I was on 1500mg/day until recently, and most people take between 100-900mg/day.

Talk to your dr. Increasing the dose gradually may well be the answer.

People on those doses typically take it for other problems, ones I don't have. My only dx is OCD.

I ended up doing fine again on the 12.5 mg dose, once I returned to it. Thanks for the suggestion, though- I appreciate everyone's time and ideas.

Chimpmaster,

Has the combination of Seroquel and Abilify controlled your hallucinations? I talked to G's PDoc about using two AAP's for this purpose (since the Geodon seems to have normalized her moods but only limited the hallucinations) and the doc said there's no evidence this is an effective therapy. Pshawwww....read the boards, doc, because I've read of several people finding this beneficial. DD is scared of gaining more weight (18 and dating) and when on Abilify before it helped (just like the Geodon) but didn't control the hallucinations. I don't know why this is such a big deal to me because she says she can deal with them (even though she'll call me in a momentary rush of panic when she has a scary one) - I'd just like to see her free of them.

Hi DMF.

Yeah the combo is good. Right now Im on 900mg seroquel + 30mg abilify.

I think my next change will be 600mg seroquel + 45mg abilify.

Seroquel is great. A lot of people do have weight gain issues on it though.
