Internet Addiction?

Recommended Posts

The following was on CNN.com today, concerning "internet addiction." I'm not sure I buy it. My choice to spend time on the internet is not a comorbid condition with my depression. My depression may influence me to spend more time online, but not as a response to a clinical "addiction." Also, for Aspies and social phobics, among others, internet socializing is preferable to interacting with other humans in the flesh because it strips away the barrier of having to grasp the nuances of non-verbal communication.

I've never heard of someone being held up in an alleyway next to an internet caf

hmmmm.......

when I worked in the library of a Sunday...you had to see the *waiting list queue* for the internet.....and the sheer bloody mindedness of the people and the pushing and shoving....and poking their library cards under my nose....and, if I was very lucky, they would say "internet"...not even a "please" (or thank you....)

me, I come under the social phobic/PTSD induced Avoidant who is trying to learn social skills and also some human connection ... after all, support forums are a different thing to many other internet activities out there......and, being with the type of PTSD I have, I cannot cope with r/l therapy groups.....

""Gimme your money or I'll hurt you, man. C'mon, I just need a few minutes online. I've just gotta check my email... I've got to... I need it. Don't f*** with me, man, I mean it - I'll cut you up!""

Hee hee hee....

Too damn funny.

Thanks for giving me a great laugh on my most stressful day this week.

Thanks - I spat my water all over the monitor when I read that lol

Cerberus - I agree with you on your point that people with a MI dx (including those as yet undiagnosed) may be driven (too strong a word?) to spend more time online, but I don't think we can discount the possibility of "internet addiction" existing as a genuine affliction.
