Has anyone combined a SSRI and Passion Flower?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys + grrls...

I'm finding it difficult to get to sleep and my naturopath has given me some Valerian/Passion Flower pills. I did some research on the net and read that Passion Flower is a mild MAOI. I know it's bad to combine an MAOI with an SSRI and i'm just wondering if anyone can tell me that they've tried passion flower whilst on an SSRI?

Heya juzzy,

Well, besides all the usual cautions about unknown purity and unknown concentration of alt meds.

Basically you're looking at increased sedation and increased s/e from whatever else you're taking.

[valerian/passionflower]

caution advised: combo may incr. risk of sedation, adverse effects (additive effects)

[valerian/antidepressants, other]

Last I checked, Passion Flower is thought to be a weak MAOI, and it has a few oddball tryptamines

mixed in as well.

Assuming that it is, you might get some increased NA/DA retention as well as increased serotonin retention

(increasing the SSRI's effects). I can't see a lot of harm to it - unless you use a LOT of it -

but I don't see it helping to overcome SSRI-induced insomnia.

Valerian on the other hand ...
