Unregistered
Oh boy, another positive reference to Bipolar, this time from Patricia Cornwell's 'Predator'. They're conducting an fMRI study of serial killers' brains, and we get the following exchange: "So." She resumes the analysis of Basil's brain. "Overall, the findings certainly reflect anomalous connectivity of frontal-limbic structures, suggesting anomalous response inhibition that may be due to deficits in a number of frontally mediated processes." "Implicating his ability to monitor and inhibit behavior," Benton says. "We're seeing a lot of that with our lovely guests from Butler [the correctional institution providing the research subjects]. Consistent with Bipolar Disorder?" "Certainly can be." Good. So now we're all serial killers, too.

betcsu
i know ive had the urge to punch people in the face but didnt know this could also be considered murderous behavior. the people i want to disfigure are random and reactionary to specific situations so i dont know about the 'serial' implications. JBella
What the hell? I've been reading Patricia Cornwall for years! That kind of turns me off to reading any more of her books. So now a symptom of bipolar is killing people? Are they going to add that to the DSM's definition?

Loon-A-TiK
I think that we all need to pay serious attention to this information that has been shared with us and keep ourselves in line wiht it. for the sake of society, we should all be locked in loony bins. resonance
some of the stuff I've read about bipolar makes me think that becoming an evil genius when I grow up is not merely within my grasp but *actually likely to happen*. serial killing, that's for amateurs. wait till I have the entire world quaking at my feet. dear world, I promise not to unleash all-out apocalypse if you grant my demands for the following: - continuous wireless access. - a legion of attractive young things to wait on me hand and foot. - fancy cheese whenever I want it. - a pony. - the head of Tom Cruise. when considering my demands, please keep in mind that my threat is not an idle one. After all, I *am* bipolar. muahahahaha. heh heh heh.
Wonder
I thought Patricia Cornwell was bipolar. Remember Joy Ikelman's Bipolar Pages? Including a list of famous living people who have experienced manic depression? She had Patricia Cornwell on it. Supposedly the list was made up of people who had publicly stated that they had experienced manic depression. There was a detailed bibliography for each of her lists, but the bibliography page isn't coming up for me in archive.org. I remember, though, that her reference for Cornwell was a New York Times article, I think from the late '90s, and I always wished I could get my hands on the article itself to see exactly what it says, but I've never read it so I don't know. I think the article's headline had something to do with shopping sprees. Can anybody shed some light on the subject? I remember from an earlier book when Lucy was taking Zoloft and it wasn't working out for her and Scarpetta wondered if maybe Lucy was bipolar and undiagnosed. (I think that reference was a pretty neutral one.) I always hoped we'd fnd out that she was, but so far, no such luck. Come to think of it, I don't find that passage from Predator all that offensive, at least not out of context. I haven't read the book yet and don't know what happens in it. So somebody says that having trouble monitoring and inhibiting one's behaviour can be consistant with bipolar disorder. Well, yeah, it can. I don't think that means that the author or characters think that all of us here are potential serial killers. It's not like all her serial killer characters are bipolar or something, and it's not like it would be impossible for someone to be both bipolar and a serial killer. I hope I didn't offend anyone by saying that I'm not really offended.
faith
I am deeply offended to my very core about your inoffensive statement about the offensiveness of that quote. I'd much prefer to think of myself as a potential serial killer, if there might be a pony when I graduate to Evil Genius. ; )
Wonder
My boyfriend bought me this T-shirt because I keep asking him for a pony. I am pretty paranoid lately and keep expecting that people will not like me and that I will annoy them. I'm not always like this.
chinacat
Hey, can I punch Patricia? BTW--se is not the ultra radican right-winger who made allthe nasty statements about the 9/11 widows and achieved her moment of fame--is she? No matter, I will want to puch her. Unregistered
It's OK, we're off the hook. It turns out there were two serial killers and an evil mastermind. The BP killer was in jail, they never caught the other one and the evil mastermind turned to be DID (well, actually MPD if there's a difference). Oh, and one victim was bipolar - itentified from Li traces in his blood. And Marino bust up with his GF after he was put on Effexor and couldn't get it up anymore. Seems she's gone mad on mental illness with this one...
wifezilla
"serial killing, that's for amateurs" Exactly. Kill a couple of people and you are a creepy serial killer...kill thousands and you are a world leader who people will neogtiate with and give buckets of money. Wonder
I know this thread is ancient, but since I got a copy of Predator for Christmas I thought I'd do a web search and see if I could find out for sure if Patricia Cornwell is bipolar. Well, she and her doctor(s?) seem relatively sure that she is. Case closed?
