A good friend, who has a ton of MI issues and a first degree specialising in pharmacology, has just emailed me the below in quotes. Apologies if all the info is elsewhere but I'm too lazy to investigate much beyond PC's pinned thread. Anyway, I think I'm going to take friend's advice:

" From my knowledge of what happened when I didn't take the fish oil for a 10 day period or so in hospital (I was a lot worse), its certainly having a significant effect on anxiety control, and probably other stuff as well. It could be well worth you trying it, there's a lot of evidence accumulating as to the omega-3 EPA (eicosapentanoic acid)'s anti-anxiety, anti-depressive, and anti-schizophrenic effects. (about 2g/day of EPA for schizophrenia is considered the optimum dose). It may even have equivalent effect to low doses of antipsychotics, and certainly has none of the side effects. It's actually in some clinical trials in the US at the moment I believe. Might want to take some vitamin C and E with it as well, they're both cheap.

Heres the link to the stuff I use, its the shit as far as fish oil goes. Won awards and stuff. Although its quite expensive, for the amount you get its no more expensive than the inferior quality stuff you can get in Savers. Also, the EPA/DHA ratio is better, if you're treating schizophrenia you don't want too much DHA in the formulation, it seems, despite the fact that it has its own beneficial effects.

I take the hi potency stuff. So yeah, I recommend spending a bit of money on a couple of bottles of the stuff while you've still got it."

So, that particular brand + vitamins C and E. D'ya reackon?

I think the overall concensus is that whichever ratio or brand that you can and will take, if it works for you,

that's the one to take.

I supplement with E 'cause it's not too expensive and I'm in a "the sun is not your friend" part of the world.

As far as Vitamin C ... my body's response to stuff like orange juice and V-8 can be summed up as

"Come here and get inta mah belly!" ... so I don't think that having extra in your diet is all that bad.

YMWV.

i really believe in this stuff too.

when you think about it, our brains are just one big mess of cell membranes, ie: highly specialized fat barriers. and we, (well me anyway), aren't eating the right fats because we're not making the food from its basic building blocks much anymore. everything we eat is so refined, the fats are the fats with low calories that stop food from spoiling blah blah blah.

anecdotally with myself and my father - he is in complete denial about his mi but is now taking 3g of fish oil a day, and he has become a lot less stressed and anxious. i notice myself being less anxious too. plus my psoriasis and allergic skin is starting to settle down, it's not as angry. i'm wearing perfume again!

anyway. if it works, why question it?

Hubby's psoriasis seems to calm down as well...IF he remembers to take it.

The fish oil really did help when he was depressed. Now that he is stable, it doesn't seem to matter so much, but during his deep deep depression, fish oil along with meds, therapy and exercise kept him from offing himself.

I'm taking 1g of fish oil per day because I take so many damn vitamins and meds that I can't swallow another huge gelcap. I have been feeling better lately, though it could be the Seroquel or the fish oil or the combination.

hm. It just occurred to silly me to take another fish oil gelcap at bedtime. That's when I take Seroquel and Lisinopril. Maybe the fish oil would kind of coat the tummy a bit.

I take lemon-flavored Nordic Naturals. It's expensive, but it seems to be high quality. I've never had the dreaded fish burps or any other issues with it.

Follow the fish oil capsules (salmon oil is the best) with LOTS of seafood.

At least FIVE fish meals a week.

That can be Chinese seafood soup, a tuna sandwich, a lobster, or even fish sticks!
