Apple doesn't give you the software, but you can easily get it online. I do the naughty thing and download videos using EMULE, then use a converter called imTOO MOV converter to convert them to the format needed for Ipod. You can also get a converter that will convert DVD files also. Just do a search and you'll find what you need. I gotta say I just LOVE my Ipod. I use mine everyday.
