susanlynn
My bud has been on phenobarbital for a 1000 years. He won't get off of it. He can buy it for cheap in TJ. Sure Keppra's great. but isn't it expensive and not covered by all kinds of plans? (I don't think he's even medi-medi.)

lemonflavor
Sorry for the intrustion but do any of the needymeds places work for people who have coverage but not enough? Mine will cover $1200 a year which isn't nearly enough if taking something like Zyprexa or Lamictal along with a bunch of others.
Penny Century
is he taking the phenobarbital under a doctor's supervision? phenobarbital has a rather nasty side effect profile and a lot of people hate it (whereas keppra has few cognitive s.e., phenobarbital can really mess with your cognition.) (i think i'm not fully understanding the question here.) i have know people who use phenobarbital to treat their epilipsy. as a last resort, after all else failed. and they've used it because it works. last resort, but worked very well. so, i guess what i'm asking is, is he only taking it because of $, or does his doctor support this decision? because it is very effective at controlling seizures. susanlynn
Far as I understand this friend's taking phenobarbital even tho' his dr.s' want him to be on a newer med. Maybe he's done other meds that haven't been as good for him grand mals. And I think the convenience of it's inexpense (and familiarity?) are flattering, too. (He likes to drive.)
