Okay, I really really don't get this... People are so sue-happy.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6046932.stm

This game is specifically set up so that you are stopping bullies from hurting other kids, but they're being sued because it might give ideas to little kids. Huh?? How's that?? Dude, I bet that lawyer let's his kids watch Looney Tunes, which has caused all kinds of kids to hurt each other.

And what is the lawyers main quote against the game: ""I'm pretty sure that the game is harmful to minors." Pretty sure. Oooh. That's the clincher, right there. Stop the press! He's pretty sure that a Teen-Only rated game with no blood, no guns, and where you are defending kids and teachers from bullies is harmful.

Oy.

I'm sorry, what? Is this a hoax? A JUDGE will play a video game? I am not allowed anywhere near the video games in my house, first person shooters included <damn it!!> because of my ineptitude. I want to SEE this judge on Court TV actually playing and not watching.

Christ on a bike. Some of the games my kids play, and we are armed to the gills with all systems and gaming computers, have no other purpose but for to KILL, KILL, KILL!!! And my 2 boys are two of the gentlest, well-rounded well-twisted kids you'll ever meet. The few comments I've made about the bloodsport objective--and nothing else--being morally wrong are met with rolling eyes and, "Mom, dude, it's just a game." As I have taught them over the years. I hate when they puke that shit back to me. But at least they are listening to something I say.

Parents are the filters for how children perceive the world, or at least, IMO, should be. That's what I've attempted to be. So even sitting on my ass when they were little, I would watch these games and interpret, explain the basics, "in real life game over means dead forever," etc.

These furious attempts to have entertainment for children stifled usually come from parents who work 100 hours a week and are clueless as to the difference between Nintendo and Playstation.

If i hit my brother in the head with a hammer every time daffy hit bugs bunny I'd be on death row. what is wrong with these parents? now a damn judge is involved? quick solution if you have ANY serious worries that your kid is that damn impressionable from video games to where you think he/she might take them so seriously that they might hurt someone its counseling time now and none of those games should be in the house and your kids shouldn't be allowed to visit other kids with games until you've had a long talk with them. hell you might need to toss the tv out the window. I didn't have sex when back in my childhood the raciest thing you saw was daytime soaps with everyone jumping in and out of bed. It was the same when hbo and cinemax showed up. If acted on every idea I got from tv when I was a kid I'd have been locked up long ago and I'm mentally interesting not even a normie. Jeez what a waste of taxpayers money. although in true old fart style I do admit to hating rap and hip hop music.

Bwahahaha! I'm the oldest of 4 with 3 brothers. I would have been executed 3 times. I beat the snot out of them, and it had nothing to do with Looney Tunes. I took my share of beatings too. Those were the days, huh?

jack thompson is probably not the brightest crayon in the box when it comes to video games. it's his mission to keep violent games away from kids, which sounds good, until you realize that in his world, every game is a violent game. like battle chess, where the pieces come to life and smack each other around. evil.

here is a wacky idea...

if you don't like your kid playing a game, don't buy it for them and ask those who would buy it to respect your wishes.

if your kid buys it for themselves, know what? they're probably old enough to decide for themselves too.

what else need be done?

damned puritanical assholes. thinking they need to protect everyone else because they're scared of themselves.

IMHO - those scared of sex and being hurt will at times project these feelings on the world and try to stop the rest of the world from knowing about sex or violence as well. this is known as neurotic; i.e. a coping mechanism gone wrong. the cure is therapy, not lawyers.

Exactly Abi!

There could be the most horrible, vile game out there, but unless mom or dad buys it or allows the kid to borrow it, how would they get a hold of it? And if you pay any attention AT ALL to what your kids are doing, you would notice they have this horrible game and TAKE IT AWAY. Der!

When my son was about 12, Conker's Bad Fur Day came out for N64. I wanted it for myself and he wanted it to, so I researched it. (description below) Sure, it was a tad raunchy, but I played it myself first and hubby & I decided if it would be OK for him to play it. It was actually a lot of fun, and the 4 player game option was so cool. We let him play. Our neighbor's son (about 3 at the time) came over to our house and played it too. When we saw him using the game (he snuck in) we asked his parents if that would be a problem since a lot of the stuff in the game was over his head. They didn't care. To this day, neither my son, the neighbor kid or me has ever used a rocket launcher to blow anyone up...though there has been tempatation ;)

Game description: Conker's twisted tale begins at his local bar, where he tosses back a few too many drinks with his war-bound friends before stumbling out into the rainy night. Drunken, confused, and vomiting profusely, Conker becomes lost and eventually blacks out. When he comes to his senses, he finds himself in a world unlike he, or anyone else for that matter, has ever seen before--a world full of gutter-mouthed cogs, LSD-dropping demons, bosses with giant testicles, and a panther king that rules minions of seemingly inept weasels. It's a demented world, and Conker's only desire is to somehow escape and catch up with his girlfriend, Berri. While little more than just a setup for the game's content, the story makes no sense until the end of the game, when several plot twists help to explain things a bit.

does anyone else beside me find it so ironic about the fuss about the boobs in the Vice City game? that a grandma would buy this game about drug dealing, killing people, stealing cars, killing cops for her grandson and think that's all ok, yet get upset because there was a pair of virtual boobs on the screen? is that fucked up or what?

I strongly approve of that policy being applied by the people to whom it makes good sense to do so.

The one caveat would be that they be allowed no legal recourse regarding the probable consequences.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yeah, I heard about this, and I agree that it is a pretty weak lawsuit.

But it's far from the stupidest thing I've heard...

If you want to see some interesting lawsuits - and rant about them here - go to this website True Stella Awards.

Look in the archives. It's chock full of them, and not the urban legend ones you hear about on the internet (man goes to the back of his rv to make coffee while it's on cruise control, crashes and sues Winnibago - never happened). There are some truly stupid people in the world that sue over the most idiotic things that are mostly their fault.

along the same lines but not quite on topic, i don't understand why violence in games, the news, and in the real world is considered to be "less harmful" than virtual boobs or anything to do with sex. what, we don't have bodies? no one is curious and no one plays doctor? kids are kids. you can raise them to not know the name of their privte parts, but instinct tells us how to use them!

let's cover up those boobs, but let the killing begin! ;)
