Ammity
So I have really bad acne from one of my meds. I don't like looking like a teenager again. Is there anything to kill this acne? I've just been using an astringent, and then applying an antibiotic.

I've just been using an astringent, and then applying an antibiotic. Sure it's regular ol' acne? Your sig says you're titrating on Lamictal. I assume this means you just started taking it. Lamictal has a nasty tendency to give people The Rash, aka Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. Which is a Bad Thing. It can make you disfigured, if not outright kill you. So if it's still there, and moreso, if you're running a fever... Get. To. Doctor. A.S.A.P.
Penny Century
astringents can overdry skin. which can make acne worse. acne is about bacteria, not oil. likewise, use a mild cleanser like cetaphil or the unscented neurtogena in the blue bottle (not the acne designed one.) acne can become immune to certain antibiotics. it's good to combine an antibiotic with a mild peel (like salyicitic acid, thought my skin is too sensitive for that and i use an rx called azelex) to keep dead skin cells from building up and clogging the pores. (don't use a scrub, they can cause small scratches in the skin which can get infected and it just makes it worse. if you "need" to scrub mix some baking soda in with your normal cleanser.) i got a case of cystic back acne from lamictal that it took 6 weeks of doxy (oral antibiotic) to calm down, followed by 2 months of a topical mild acid peel and a topical antibiotic+benzoylperoxide combo to clear up. and it still needs spot treatment once in a while. i use azelex and topical antibiotic on my face. and a mild cleanser and sunblock, of course. the best thing i ever did for all of this was see a dermo. med-induced acne is a bitch. you mentioned that you're using antibiotic already, but you may want to make a second visit and change the meds. your acne may just be immune to that antibiotic (i cycle which one i use.) and, in case herr has made your scared, the dermo will be able to tell if it's acne or SJS. (mine was acne. fugly acne, but acne.)

I totally agree with penny. I got some lovely face breakouts (and still do) due to lamictal I believe and I have a very similar skin regimen now as penny does. My skin is super sensitive as well, so I use azelex. I have cycled topical antibiotic before as well ( i most recently went from clindamycin to klaron). see the doc and they should be able to help. good luck! AirMarshall
Lets not go crying wolf over every zit being SJS! Lamictal does tend to cause skin breakouts. There is nothing special about skin care with meds. Just do the normal things. a.m.
Penny Century
Lamictal does tend to cause skin breakouts. There is nothing special about skin care with meds. Just do the normal things. a.m. some people were lucky enough to have never had skin issues until meds, and for them it can be really confusing. which is why i gave such a long answer. there are a lot of acne products out there that are simply too harsh for skin, and irritating the skin and causing it to flake can cause more clogged pores. then you have dry, scaly, red skin that still has acne, and this just plain sucks. which is also why i mentioned the dermo. (in addition to quelling any paranoia about SJS, when SJS doesn't really look all that much like acne, and no, i am not looking up a picture and please, no one post a picture.) dermos can explain proper skin care and give nice happy gentle products. last thing photosensitive skin needs is to be irritated and peeling. AirMarshall
Yes Penny, your skin care directions are excellent. I particularly wanted to make the point that skin blemishes do not constitute SJS and aren't reason to run to the ER. a.m.

I do something similar, or at least did a few years back, when my hormones subject me to periodic acne outbreaks. This might point a little bit towards the point that it's nothing life-threatening, and as said here before, it's probably not (yes, I take back what I said earlier =P). december_brigette
Hi All, I have had a zit here or there on my face - especially during period time. But when I started lithium, my skin took on a whole new direction. and it wasnt my face - it was my back. in my whole life i never had back acne until i started lithium. I used neutrogena's acne body wash (opposite of the one PC mentioned). and it worked like a charm. SO, I just wanted any lurkers to know that yes it can work for some people. HOWEVER....I cant use it on my face because it dries me out. i can only use it on my back, front & legs. Good Luck, december
