generic ambien?

Recommended Posts

Hi people,

Was filling my Ambien script today (in Australia) and my pharmacist told me that she'll be receiving generic ambien next week and it'll be at least 20% cheaper than sanofi-brand. Has anyone heard?

Being careful here, because Rain is in Australia, and each countries patents and laws are different...

The US patent for Ambien expired in October 2006.

The US FDA data base shows 13 pending applications for generic approvals: Par Pharmaceuticals, Mylan, Mutual, Cipla Ltd, Watson Labs, and GenPharm, Biovail, Teva, Roxane, Pliva, Caraco, Synthon, Apotex, as of today. No generic has been received final approval.

Everyone of these companies has "Tentative Approval". Some based on applications 2 or more years old. Unfortunately, the FDA won't take action on any generic drug approval until the day after the patent expires. This guarantees the original patent holder months if not years more of effective monopoly.

[edit] BTW, In September I heard an interview with an FDA official. The FDA has over 600 applications for generic drugs approval. He commented that they do not have enough personnel or budget to process them in a faster manner. Their solution is that they may choose one or two companies for each drug to be processed sooner. Can you imagine how cheap Ambien would be if even 6 of the 13 companies were competing?

You can check the approval status and form of any US meds here: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder...earch_Drug_Name

Just an update: An online pharmacy site in Australia already lists generic Ambien as being being produced my "Arrow Pharmaceutical" - which is the same mob that makes my generic Luvox as Faverin.

Apart from that I've not physically "seen" generic ambiens.
