spin off of lithium experience: how do you cope with instestinal distress?

Recommended Posts

I noticed on the other thread that many of us have trouble on lithium with among other things-forgive me i can't spell- diarhea.

i've had to cancel appointments because i can't get out of the house- its days and days in a row which causes the good old roihds, bleeding and pain.

i'm kind of going crazy with ths ( relatively speaking as its working for my moods so i don't want to have to give up for side effects.

please any suggestions- i'm so miserable ( and i thought i was miserable before!!)

i feel like i've dicoverded a whole new aspect to being MI:not being able to sleep cause your a$$ hurts!

i know it sounds funny and all , but at the time its so awful!! please help if you can!

Split the dose, morn/eve.

Take it with substantial food, even taking the tab in the middle of the meal to ensure it is buffered. Drink a glass of water before and after the meal.

Drink plenty of water thru the day (2 -3 quarts is recommended) to flush lithium from the kidney and body.

a.m.

Splitting didn't work for me, nor did a ton of water and extra salt. I had thought about asking the pdoc if something like immodium would be a solution, so you may want to ask.

In my case, bladder issues have also become unbearable and I dont think there is a solution for that so I'm requesting discontinuation tomorrow. I did follow all your good advice and continued taking it until my appointment, so I can do it with pdoc's blessing (I hope).

I hope you guys can figure something out for the diarrea though. It's pretty inconvenient.

I get these anti-diarhheal pills at Wal-Mart. (They're generic wally world brand, the cheap shit...heh, I made a pun!) They work a treat. For general stomach distress I am never far from my pepto or maalox. (of course the pills are always with me too)

I swear, those pills are some of the best OTC drugs there are... just look for them or their equivalent in the same aisle as pepto et al.

Can those be taken every day long term? I use Loperamide now and then if that's what you're referring to. I don't take them every day because I'm afraid of it losing its effectiveness.

Another possible solution is a very constipating tricyclic like clomipramine which is weak on noradrenaline.
