Do CNS stimulants and bipolar work?

Recommended Posts

I am having a whole lot of trouble with my ADHD but I have bipolar.

So I was wondering if things like Adderall or other stimulants can work if you have Bipolar?

Anyone have any experience or thoughts?

What should I watch out for if I do get a rx?

Will my pdoc most likely not give me a stimulant?

Maybe. There are risks but it's your brain and if you know and accept the risks you should have the right the right to try, IMHO.

If you do not have a long history of psychosis and your bp has been stabilized then risks of inducing mania or psychosis should be minimal. You may have to take them in conjunction with an anti-psychotic. Using the currently available stimulants for ADD can be like using a bazooka to kill a rat. Psychiatry just doesn't have any more refined weapons at its disposal that work for most people.

If you haven't already tried strattera, do that first.

I tried strattera awhile back.

It worked but only minimally

I could see if it's better this time but that's up to my Pdoc

I'm on a anti-psychotic anyway.

What are some other good ones? for ADD/Bipolar?

I take adderall and have zero troubles with it my only warning is to (unless your doc says otherwise) take it early in the day or it will mess with your sleep. I'm Bp/add/agoraphobia(sometimes)/anxiety/lifelong sleep issues so I also have klonopin prn for anxiety related meltdowns, ambien, and of course seroquel. Everyones bodies are really different so you may have to try a few things before you find stuff that works. Everything I have now is working decently(for now Goddess I hope it lasts) though I'm told I need an anti-depressant and wellbutrin and I didn't see eye to eye so it had to go.

Talk to your docs and explore your options. It will require patience (oh how patience tests me) but hopefully you'll find a combo that suits you

good luck

lilie
