bjm
i apologize if this belongs elsewhere, like in the wellbutrin thread. just move it if it goes somewhere else. my tdoc mentioned to me, on more than one occasion, that wellbutrin is also marketed as zyban, as a smoking cessation aid. now, i'm a pretty heavy smoker - almost a pack a day. i have been for almost five years, and the yearly bouts of bronchitis are starting to get to me, so i'm thinking about quitting for new years. anyway, my question is this: have any of you used wellbutrin for this purpose? right now i'm being treated for either bipolar II or unipolar depression, depending on which doc you ask. my med cocktail has been pretty stable for the last year or so, with a few bumps up in dosages here and there. i'm kind of hesitant to change whats working so well right now, but if wellbutrin will help me quit smoking, i'd love to try it. any thoughts/experiences? Thomas
I quit smoking while I was on wb and it was easier than other times. That said I still always smoke if I am in the hospital, though I couldn't tell you why. I haven't smoked since I left the hospital in the first week of May. MiaB
I'm probably just extremely stubborn, but WB (prescribed as part of my BP cocktail) had no effect on my smoking whatsoever. Or rather, it did make the cigs taste a little odd in the beginning, but, being an idiot who had no desire to quit, I just pushed on through that. On the other hand, it really helped one of my brothers, who'd been smoking heavily for years. IMO it goes down to actually wanting to quit, b/c once you've got that mind state in place, the Zyban can only help. good luck M

bjm
right now i'm on 10mgs of abilify, 225mgs of effexor, and a small dose of propranalol (i can't remember how much exactly).
Loon-A-TiK
wb/zyban makes a lot of people feel more "activated" or alert and even hyper. considering that you take abilify, another one that usually makes people feel activated and hyper, along with effexor, a heavy-duty AD, i think your pdoc would be really hesitant to put you on wellbutrin/zyban. then again, who knows? i know it didn't do anything to help my ex boyfriend to stop smoking. but like everyone is saying, you have to want to stop smoking, and i don't think he has (or will ever) reached that point. if your pdoc thinks it is ok and you are really commited to stopping, and really want to stop, then i'd give it a go. you never know until you try. Kablume
Wellbutrin has a higher dosage and is prescribed longer than Zyban. I have been on WB for years. I am also on Topamax this time. May have helped. I stopped smoking in June. I have smoked for 33 yrs. I had no cravings nor withdrawls. I play around with 5 lbs of weight. I feel very lucky. If I want a cigarette, it's in my head. I hope you find something that works for you. Good luck. Sondra
