stupid question regarding backups

Recommended Posts

how do you create backups? i have an ibook g4 which has a CD burner but not a DVD burner. i've lost everything due to hard drive failure before, so i know data backups are really really important, but how do you make them? thanks.

I guess if you want to backup everything you'll have to get an external drive, or you'll be sitting there with 100000 CDs.

CD-burning programs are easy to find online, at least trial versions. I'm not sure for Mac, but look around.

This is one for Macintosh I could find right now: http://www.download.com/NTI-Dragon-Burn/30...tml?tag=lst-0-1

It's a 5-use trial so it sucks, but I'm sure there's more stuff out there. Try http://www.download.com

Check that you don't have a combo drive. DVDs would be saner for that.

Generaly if you want to keep a whole drive backed up you do incremental backups to a backup server or a spare drive in your desktop.

There's a nifty little unix program called rdiff-backup that does what you want and it runs on OSX. Someone has to have written a graphical front end for it to make it usable by non sysadmins.

Um. Bug Nalgas.

Gee, I should do this, too.

Nalgas, how do we do it with our Macs?

I don't think I have a whole lot of irreplaceable stuff on this thing, but everyone always says you should back it up.

olga

PS I do know where the slot is where you insert DVDs and CDs.....so that's a start. ;)
