Neurontin as a pain medication?

Recommended Posts

So this has nothing to do with mental illness, my little brother was just prescribed nuerontin for pain in his shoulder. He is starting off with a 300mg dose and the doctor wants him to go up to 900mg over time. What can you guys tell me about this drug?

The interesting thing is that i'm pretty convinced he's bipolar like I am so it will be interesting if the nuerontin helps his moods.

My mom is super freaked out about him taking it, especially since i just read that it can cause seizures and what not. My brother isn't very resposible or reliable, so i'm sure he won't be taking it on a regular basis like he's suppose to.

my ex was on it for pain. it helps, i believe, pain that has to do mostly with nerve issues. it regulates neural firing and therefore keeps the nerves calmer. they prescribe it for chronic pain and pain that is a result of things like fibromyalgia (that's why she was on it).

it does need to be taken regularly. it's one of those that's best taken at the same times each day, regularly spaced.

I was on elavil for fibro... something about it messing with neurotransmitters in the brain to make the pain better? but my elavil was at a "nontherapeutic dose" so it wasn't supposed to do anything to my moods. (and hey -- it didn't do anything for the pain either! ;) )
