trying to go off sleeping pills

Recommended Posts

when i say normal, i guess i mean a time before bp. obviously i wasn't sleeping well because i had to take sleeping pills.

so, i have heard that you can become dependant on the pills and therefore have trouble falling asleep without them. if this is the case, is there a time period that you would go back to a "normal" state?

i guess that doesn't make sense because i really couldn't sleep anyways so i guess i would go back to that "normal" state. so hard to explain.

do sleeping pills help correct the problem? should i be able to sleep better once i am off?

if anyone understands what the hell i am trying to say, please let me in on it. would love to hear your responses.

No. It's not uncommon to have rebound insomnia when you go off them, meaning that the insomnia is worse than it was before you even started taking them. If you're bp it's important that you not get sleep deprived as that can easily destabilize things btw. You may have to just trade one sleep med for another.

generally 3 to 5 days for me... after a couple days I get tired enough that I start falling asleep naturally.

Still, I will go for a while without med, say a week or two, then use it and be surprised at how much better sleep I get and how much better I feel. Nonetheless, I do try to minimize use, and split pills to take the least necessary.

rebound insomnia. ok. probably, most likely. i guess i am trying to figure out at what point is it insomnia and at what point is it just the same old bad sleep problem i had before.

i definitely do not want to exacerbate my bp. maybe if i go so many days without sleep i will just take a pill to catch up.

bed time: between 11:30 and 1:00

wake up: 11:00ish

right now: i get up to pee a lot. i wake up early wide awake. stay up an hour and am tired again. try so hard not to take a nap in afternoon, but just give in sometimes because i am soooo tired. trying not to do that.

i think the longest i have stayed asleep without interruption is 4 hours. lots of getting up and down after that. so maybe get about 6-7 hours altogether. not bad, but not refreshing.

oh, and i am talking about that this is after going off sleeping pill. still early to tell, though.

thanks AM for the hope!

thanks everyone!

I have the getting up to pee problem too. There is a fine line to walk at bedtime. I keep water by the bed because I am a mouth breather so my mouth gets really dry when I am asleep, but if I drink too much of the water, then I have to get up to pee.
