wifezilla
I have a girlfriend who was told to stay on South Beach Phase 2 to help control diabetes.
Rabbit37
I try to do something inbetween atkins and south beach. Mainly, just eliminating carbs is my goal. When I had some strong willpower, I dropped 10 lbs pretty easily and quickly. Nothing fancy, just ate a lot of vegetables and some fruit, and lean meats. It's just that damn willpower, and the cravings for breads. I recently got off risperdal, I need to lose a few pounds too. I swear, starting *tonight* I'm going to go back to it. We'll just forget all about that gigantic bagel I had for breakfast...
Caillech
Lol rabbit....I wont tell if you dont tell.... Its good to hear that the weight went away when you were watching your carb intake. My fear is that the fat is here to stay even if I eat differently. Like because the meds put it there..nothing will work to take it off. I went off of risperdal hoping to reverse the weight gain and that didnt help. So, I have to get proactive about it. Wifezilla, if I continue to gain, I will surely end up diabetic. It scares me so much that I want to stop taking the meds. But then im a basket case. I cant win for losing. We'll just forget all about that gigantic bagel I had for breakfast... I think that's the right idea rabbit has...the lean meats with vegetables. I have been trying to eat lots of raw vegetables along with some lean meats and cutting out artificially sweetened stuff, pastries, high carbs, (never drank much sodas except for diet cola) I have been eating a lot of raw carrots, raw celery, salad greens..I think it has finally stopped the constant weight gain from seroquel and haldol. I would also be pleasantly surprised if I was losing weight. (keeping my fingers crossed here). I think i will see some results from an exercise program... Rabbit37
I can't do too much raw, I don't have the taste for it. But one of my favorite snacks/lunches is broccoli (cut into florets) and shredded/diced carrots, lightly tossed with olive oil and roasted in the toaster oven for about 15 minutes. The florets get a little crunchy, and the carrots taste so sweet. It helps when I'm having cravings.
Libby
Wifezilla, if I continue to gain, I will surely end up diabetic. It scares me so much that I want to stop taking the meds. But then im a basket case. I cant win for losing. Me too!!! I have gained and lost the same 15 lbs over and over and aover again since last summer. I gained 10 pounds this WEEK because I've been binging on carbs. The good news is that once you actually DO give up the carbs, you lose the cravings.. but once you give in, it's bloody murder. Unregistered
Well I guess I tried the equivalent of the South Beach Diet - a kind of phase 2 Atkins for some weeks while trying to shift Zyprexa induced lard and had no success. I lost weight, but slowly and only as a result of brutal gym work. I switched to hard-core Atkins induction phase at the start of January, and I've lost about 10lbs so far (another 5 to go). Caillech
So, it seems to me that if you stay on the strictist (sorry cant spell) phase of the diet, for a longer period of time, you lose more quickly? I know I shouldnt have high expectations, but im very hopeful that this diet (and exercise) will help take of the weight. Im also very scared that 1. I will keep gaining no matter what I eat and 2. the diet wont do shit. I have never been this heavy in all my life with the exception of being in the last week of my last pregnancy. Thanks for all the info. It gives me hope. Selene
Unregistered
Hmmm, well you should probably discuss this with someone qualified... According to Atkins, you do the induction phase for 2 weeks to kick start ketosis. I did Atkins 3 years ago and I was on induction for about 8 weeks, and only added carbs very slowly over the next 6 months. I lost 40lbs in six months, most of that in the first three or four months and didn't die from it, so it seems you can ignore the instructions. I basically got addicted to watching the weight loss week by week. I've been doing the induction phase for 5 weeks now and I've lost 10lbs, but I was starting from a lower weight than last time (I only needed to lose 15lbs this time instead of 40lbs). So my advice is to do it hard core for as long as you can, but be careful, and drink LOTS of water.
Victoria
....Picking up where you all left off. Over the last notquitefouryears, I've endured the test, tweak and refining phases of getting my meds, *ahem* just right for Bipolar Disorder, Bulimia/Anorexia, Migraines, Anxiety/Panic Attacks, Sobriety (I say this bc it eliminated lots of rx's) and spinal surgery. Thru the lithium, topamax, prozac, seroquel, lamictal, trazadone, effexor, neurontin, cymbalta, post surgical percocets & benzos, and an assload of others, I have managed to doddle with a little bit of weight gain that easily came off. NOTHING HAS PUT WEIGHT ON ME LIKE LYRICA. I finally spent a year of my life free of my eating disorders, maintained my weight, went on Lyrica and BAM - 10 lbs in roughly 2 months - most within the 1st. I already eat healthier than anyone I know (concept based on Atkins modified/Southbeach diets) - raw veggies, berries and a variety of fruit, soy products, lean meats, EVOO, low net carb, double fiber bread & cereal with added protein, flax and omega fatty acids. My refrigerator and cabinets would not be enticing to any child. I drink 2-3 liters of carbonated water a day, and have to take ADDITIONAL fiber as the meds all cause back-ups... I also get outside (in the cold) with my dogs every day for about an hour at the park. I don't want to give up on anything, but I don't like the expanded belly and thighs either. HELP.
