Is there a name for this issue?

Recommended Posts

I sleep for about 8 hours, I used to sleep 10-12. Anyway, no matter how hard i try (and yes I have tried Everythig) I can't get to sleep before about 3 AM and I wake up comepletely unrested and most of the time in a lot of pain. sometimes I wake up here and there but can go back to sleep. i remember about half my dreams.

This late sleeping cycle has been especially bad the last couple of years. I seem to be able to sleep normally in a hospital, but no mattter how hard I try, I end up in the old sleep pattern after a few days.

any thoughts?

Anonther source for Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome. Your sleep/wake cycle is basically off from 'normal'.

You fall asleep later than most people and have trouble waking early in the morning.

You may also have something else going on on top of that which could explain waking up completely unrested. You might have fragmented sleep- waking up many many times a night [and not realizing it when you do]- or sleep apnea or something else[about.com] going on. The best way to figure all of this out would be to go to a sleep clinic if possible. Otherwise there are various ways to deal with DSPS, including meds, light therapys, and altered schedules.

I would loo at the about.com page to see if anything else seems to fit better.

The late sleeping sounds like what the others have mentioned DPSS, but maybe your pain is making it worse. Do you know what is causing your pain (I saw the scoliosis and joint pain mentioned in your siggy - is it from that)? Have you worked with your doc on controlling it with meds or PT?

Damn, sounds like me but without the pain. I tend to have to heavily medicate myself to get on a normal schedule. I would much rather get up at 2 pm and my internal clock always resets itself to "night owl" off meds. I didn't know there was a name for it, my parents just called it "lazy."

Thanks for the ideas. i read the wikipedia entry and it's me to a T. I'll bring this up to both my docs. Once my pdoc said it was a sleep hygiene issue. that is the only thing we have ever disagreed on. It doesn't matter how many hypnotics or sedatives I take, I just can't sleep until 3 or so.

As far as things I haven't tried, the only thing is light therapy.

I think I can do it in the hospital because they are sleep nazis. I really napped a lot though.

Maybe I could persuade my gdoc to get a sleep study. I'm also going to show this to my pdoc and my parents.

The pain is a thorny issue. because of what I already take, I can only take some NSAIDS. I'm on a pretty heavy duty one and it's not much help. as long as I don't stress myself too much the pain is manageable. But if I go up stairs My joints hurt. Cleaning takes a looong time because I have to stop every few minutes to rest.

jeff--

the pain could also be due to orthopaedic issues. I tend to move around a lot and kick like hell in my sleep, and often wake up in slightly contorted positions (occasionally even horizontal across the bed). also, check your mattress, it may be due for a turning (flipping).

Delayed sleep phase syndrome. I've had it for three years. The treatment is getting up in the morning at sunrise and sitting in the sun (bright light therapy). It never worked for me and I've been on a few meds for it and considering Ambien next.

Yeah my parents say I'm a night owl and call me lazy too cuz i sleep all morning and don't go to school.

Maceo, have you thought about night school? In some areas you could graduate before your class and start college early. College is much easier cuz you can take later classes.

My dad actually mentioned that. I will look into it. Thanks.
