Peaks and Valleys when starting Lex or any other AD

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Ok so it's been one month on Lex. Started at 10 for a week. tried to go to 20 since that was the working does I had a few years ago but ended up ratcheting it back down to 15 for two weeks and then up to 20 where I have been for 2 weeks.

The fist time I took lexapro. It started to kick in at 20 mg and I never looked back. This time though when I was at 15 it started kicking in a after a week I has a couple of down days which passed,. I then went up to 20 and had been good there and thought all was fine. But this weekend I am having a down period. Now I've been explained this by a tharapist before and have read others experience it too that during the start up of a AD that you have peaks and valleys as you body adjust to the meds. Meaning you may feel better, good or great for a few days or weeks then suddenly feel down for a spell. That this will decrease in frequencey over time as your body becomes more aclimated to the AD in your body.

I guess this is unnerving to me since I didn't really experience this the first time I took Lex. When looking at the past month I have yet to be on a steady dose for longer than two weeks yet and all together have only been on Lex a few days more than a month.

Anyone here have experince with the peaks and valleys? You know the worse fear is "Oh Sh*t! it stopped working!"

Try looking at your progress as a general trend. Don't measure each day. But if at the end of the month you're feeling better overall than at the beginning, then something's working. Even though you start seeing benefit in two or three weeks, it really takes several weeks, if it's going to work for you, for things to level out and be better in general.

Hope things keep getting better.

Thanks for commenting. As I mentioned with my prior experience with Lex, once it kicked in there was no looking back. Was pretty smooth sailing. I suppose thats an exception since I have read others freak when they first started a med that seemed to be working then they dipped. I guess once you been through the drill a few times you freak less about it.

I don't know if its that I dipped or just got slammed with the lethargy /apathy (I don't care at all) side effect which I hear Lex can hit you hard with but usually goes away within a few weeks.

I was in the 3rd week on 15 mg of Lex when I started feeling positive effects. Makes me wonder if I should have just stayed there.
