Maybe not. I recall a page on CrazyMeds pointing out that noradrenaline uptake inhibitors (adderall primarily increases NA release, but I think there's some reuptake inhibition with it)

can make a person less "activated" because the brain has other mechanisms to clear out the noradrenaline and short-circuit the process.

Then again, if you're only making it through the day on brute force, determination, and the persistent irritation of cow-orkers to keep you awake ... adderall is likely to help your

frontal lobes pounce on the hidden "sleep" button just as if you did have ADD.

Do you get better sleep at night and need less during the day if you take it before bedtime? That can help ADD (cuts down on late-night shoulda/oughta conversations with self, and limits

late-night net-surfing when you know you should be heading to bed instead ) and some sleep problems (it's a decongestant, and you sleep better when you can breathe better)

i'm not the chemist of the crowd so i can't talk about how adderall hits different parts of the brain, but i know that it makes me feel relaxed. not tired as in sleeping as if i were on seroquel or something, but i don't need klonopin during the day because i take adderall. weird reaction, i know, but we're all different i suppose.

have you talked to your pdoc about it? maybe trying a different agent would help. adderall is great, but if you can't function, then it isn't so great for you.

Hey everyone. Anyone else take adderall and feel realllllly sleepy.
I get a more "relaxed" feeling from taking it. It stops a lot of the "needing to do this and that" and helps me concentrate. Instead of "I really need to reply to this, but oh yeah I'd better check my e-mail. But before I can get through one e-mail I should check the boards real quick.....and then..."

What type of Adderall are you taking? Sometimes that makes a difference in some people.

For me, only Adderall IR is a good fit because I can adjust the dosage easily. Granted I have to take it three times a day, but I need that type of flexiblity.

I have taken adderall in the past and was off of it for a while but lately it just makes me tired.
How long were you off of it? Do you take any other meds? Have you made any changes in your meds since you last took it regularly?

Sorry for the questions but those are all things that may need to be factored in to know why it's acting differently for you now.

I slept for 16 hours... im sleepy at work etc...
If you've been going like a maniac due to ADD/ADHD then perhaps it's just letting you feel what you couldn't feel before. If you don't have that constant need to do something, then maybe it's allowing you to feel as tired as your body truly is?

does that mean i def. have add? or dont..,.. or what????
I can't "say". Sorry.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

I was prescribed Focalin (it's one of the isomers thats in Ritalin) so is a similar stimulant today and within and hour and a half of taking it, I couldn't keep my eyes open. I conked right out and didn't wake up for 7 hours! This was at like 1:30pm and I had a lot of things to do today -- I thought they were supposed to do the opposite too? AARGH. I don't see the doc for another 2 weeks and this sucks. I'll try it again tomorrow, but still.

I'm with ya' - I'll be curious about responses to this post too.

Psychomotor stimulants are supposed to relax people who have been diagnosed with ADHD or ADD in order to help them focus their mental and creative energies towards completing major goals. These goals may be personal, familiy, or work oriented and often intertwined, but nevertheless, the inability to timely achieve these goals leads to difficulties that most "normal" people cannot comprehend. The "average" person can "normally" focus on tasks without excessive interuption from external stimuli (i.e. converstations in the hall or the chatter of a deskmate on the telephone). Although the true physiological mechanisms behind ADHD and ADD are unknown (we each have our own unique physiologies), a common link is a tendancy to multi-talk to the point where none of the tasks are gettting done, although a great deal of effort is put in to complete these many tasks at once. Therefore, ADD and ADHD should not be seen as disorders of reduced mental function, but rather as as an enhanced cognitive and emotional state that requires some serious help from some potent therapeutics (mind you, they give these to children). ADHD/ADD drug dosages will indeed vary from person to person. It is individual metabolism that determines the pharmacokinetic profile of the drug in "you". Some people have diets that predispose them a rapid metabolism of amphetamines. It could be as simple as the fact that they drink a lot of acidic drinks such as orange juice or grapefruit juice (high pH in urine speeds up amphetamine metabolism). Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is used to treat overdose of these drugs. IR release formulations will always have a more intense effect, but also have a quicker comedown, often associated with fatigue and somnolence. That is why the XR has become popular. However, during these formulation changes, a slower introduction of the drug into the blood stream reduces the "highs" that are sometimes characteristic of the IR version, thus reducing abuse potential.

In addition, too much amphetamine in ADHD/ADD individuals can somnolence rather than an expected energetic state. It could send your friend to the moon and back, but you will find yourself with the best night sleep of your life. It is important to determine the proper titration of the dose; most likely starting with the lowest dose possible.

Do not be discouraged if these drugs do not work for you. Taking "holidays" also help reduce tolerance to the drug which prevents you from having to escalate the dose. IR/XR combos are often helful if the second XR dose keeps you going for too long after the last dose.

Hope this was of help to some of you.

SOmetimes I get a state where I either need to sleep or DO SOMETHING. Kind of weird. Probably less of a problem as time goes on. Small amounts help me sleep better, at least most of the time. And sometimes I can nap on the full dose.
