chimpmaster
after being treated for depression all these years its been decieded I have anxiety as my main illness what sort of meds work for this or are anti depressants used? I am taking Zoloft and Lithium It would be unusual to take lithium to treat anxiety - I assume you are bipolar? Benzos can be a very effective supplement to an anti depressant. eg valium & klonopin. Different dr's have different opinions on the use of these though. There are also other meds like buspar which some people find effective; though opinions are very much mixed on buspar. Sunshine
SSRIs are often used to treat anxiety - especially Paxil. I'm not really sure how Paxil works differently than Zoloft or the other SSRIs, though. My pdoc had been telling me for years that my primary diagnosis was anxiety, not depression, too. But I kinda blew him off because I always associated anxiety with social anxiety, constant worrying that bad things will happen, agoraphobia... that kind of thing.... and that's just not me. But the more I understand the disorder and since starting Xanax (a benzo), I'm inclined to think he was right. I also found Cymbalta (a multiple [serotonin and norepinephrine] reuptake inhibitor) to be extremely effective in treating both the anxiety and depression symptoms.
