Loon-A-TiK
Well, i've been on all atypicals but Clozaril. i gained about 70 pounds over a year on Zyprexa. Tack up another 50 from Risperdal. The other AAPs I couldn't tolerate. Now I'm going old school. with Haldol. hopefully it'll work. Any good haldol stories out there? i know your actual question at the end of your paragraph is about haldol, but your topic line is about being fat, so i'll address that. i gained about 40-50lbs with zyprexa. i'm 5'4, so that was a lot on me. i got to the point where i couldn't take it anymore. i joined weight watchers, joined the gym, got off zyprexa, and had my pdoc put me on a combo of 450WB and dopamax too, to get rid of the weight. i got down to a normal weight in about 3 months. i'm a slacker in the winter (i love warm weather outdoor sports but hate the gym), so i quit the gym and weight watchers taught me how to eat right so i didn't have to go to meetings anymore, and my cocktail went back to normal, without the zyprexa. i lost more weight with the addition of adderall. i weigh roughly 110lbs. what i recommend is first join weight watchers. everyone, even people of a regular weight, should go to at least a few weight watchers meetings. they teach you how to eat right and eat wholesome foods. most people just let their metabolism do whatever it will do, but eating right is key to our good health. you'll lose weight just being on the plan. it is easy to follow and you won't be hungry. after a few sessions, they'll introduce you to dr. approved exercise, and you get bonus points for exercising. the weight does come off. and it stays off. you learn how to eat healthy for life. i can't say enough about WW. besides being on adderall, which i think really does speed up my metabolism, eating right helps me keep my weight in check. give it a go! as for haldol, i don't know how it is in the weight dept. you'd have to look up the side effects. i only took it for a little while, so i don't know how much insight i have about it. it made me too tired and i couldn't think straight. it is easy for me to not think straight because of the ADD- but this made it far worse. i had to get off of it. i hope you have luck with everything! loon
DMF
Good luck, sdjeff! I know someone using that with Zyprexa and it really does help. Our PDoc will not prescribe it because of the akathesia (spelling?) potential and dd's age. How about Seroquel - it's working for dd but she has also gained about 60 lbs. blackbird
Hi sdjeff I use haldol PRN (not full time as it caused hyperprolactinaemia) and it works a treat for me, I haven't noticed any weight gain or problems with tremors etc good luck and keep us updated blackbird x
Penny Century
there is also abilify. there are actually studies showing that people switched from zyprexa to abilify lost weight. at the very least it's weight neutral.
