Guest Guest_supergwen_*
Depakote is stinky in my opinion, but still one of the best BP meds around. Give it a shot.
synthetic
I tried Lamictal and Lithium before finding Depakote and I'm happy to say that, so far, it's been pretty good to me. It took a little while for things to even out, but for the first time in a long time, I'm somewhat, sort of stable. Is there anything in particular you are worried about? sheerah
I'm taking Lamictal with Depakote and my moods have stablized. Additionally, I'm on Cymbalta, Wellbutrin to address depression and Provigil for the awful drowsiness caused by all this stuff. Can't tell you how they work seperately, but together they've helped me immensely Sandy
Tenebrae
depakote has been a god send and has evened me out for the first time since i started the med-go-round 20 years ago. i also take cymbalta, but i'm heavy on the depression side of things. but no more dysphoric mania/hypomania! woo hoo! it's like, who is this seemingly functional person?! oh! me! i did freak out in the beginning, because i shed like crazy on the stuff. and my curly hair got straight, and it reduces my cognitive function a bit, forget words, solve math more slowly, but i would rather have someone think i am bad at math and have a poor vocabulary, than get fired for chasing the boss with a knife. i too found it took awhile to finally even me out. i <3 the stuff. Ringworm
Just to add my 2p. I must make clear my experiences with these drugs was in combination with Lithium Carbonate - so, really, this post could be said to be irrelevant crap. I found Depakote made me too...erm...'stable', if that's buzz word for that feeling. To explain that, I felt numb to my emotional core. Some may see that as a release but I saw that as an alternative prison, nothing more. Again, could have been the action of the combination of mood-thingies, rather than the effect of the Dep' proper. But, we're all different. I hope it works out for you and gets you to where you want to be
scatty
You should tirate up on the depakote very slowly when taking lamictal. You may not need as much lamictal when combined with depakote. I'm sure your doc can tell you more about this combo.

What can I expect? Numb Do you know why your pdoc's picked Depakote specifically to add on to Lamictal? It's often more effective than lamictal for dealing with rapid cycling or hypo/mania, so I'm guessing you may have something like that going on at the moment? As far as side effects, people have very different experiences with depakote side effects. Mine weren't all that bad. I took it with lamictal, as you'll be doing. I think the worst were some memory problems, and some fatigue during start up, that mostly dissipated within a few weeks, though they did tend to reappear whenever I increased my dosage. Guest Heidi
I was diagnossed with Bp 20 years ago and finally found a Dr I trust to help with me it. I was put on tegrotol for a week and it was wonderful but I had a horrible allergic reaction so now they are thinking depakote or lamictal. Do not know much about either. Just want to have a normal life without wanting to jump on someone if they talk to me in the morning or have to close me mouth so the words stop rushing out. Can anyone tell me if they have anything similar and which helped. I have a business and need to be able to function. Thank you I really appreciate any info.
