Lexapro 40mg or over?

Recommended Posts

I've heard that anything over 20mg with Lexapro makes no difference. Is this true?

Does anyone have any positive experiences with high dosages.

Lexapro helped my anxiety but not depression and i've been feeling suicidal, so went to the doc and she's doubled my dosage. But i'm really freaking out that it might be all for nothing.

I know it's trial and error with meds but i want to know there's atleast a chance of it working.

Hopefully someone gave you some encouragement? It appears there is still no one minding the antidepressant boards very well. ;) Maybe that is because everyone is too damn depressed. How are you doing? While studies say all sorts of things each persons brain reacts differently and there are some who do well on increases of Lex. Give it a go. IF however your suicidal thoughts get worse you know the drill. Go for help immediately. If you don't feel some improvement in a few weeks don't wait, switching to an older ssri like paxil or prozac or zoloft may be better to deal with your depression since we know the ssri has helped your anxiety. You should not have to wait and "clear" the lex from your system for the switch either. I have never had to, when changing between basic ssri's. (not for more than 24 hours)

Actually, I think I read on the PI sheet that there is no evidence for additional effect above 10mg, even though 20 is the max dose. But everyone is different. I personally haven't noticed a dramatic difference at doses any higher than 10mg. But you should give it some time, up to one month. I've seen a lot of people here go above 20mg, and I'm sure it's helped some of them.

it is all so, so individual. i used to take 60mg paxil and you're not supposed to benefit at that dose, but it was the dose that did it finally. that's potent stuff. you may want to think about paxil if lex fails. i'm just in love with the stuff.

...

anyway, it isn't a problem to take 40mg lex. it isn't going to hurt you unless you have a medical condition that would be aggravated, and you haven't said anything about one (also, i'm assuming your pdoc wouldn't prescribe something that could kill you).

so, relax about it. as i said, i used to take a whole lot of paxil and it worked great. you're also not *supposed* to benefit from doses of lamictal higher than 200mg, but many people, including me, take 400mg.

Well it seems you've given up on the lexapro, but in response to your original question, yes, I have definetly felt an increased effect from doses above 20mg. I currently take 30mg a day, and if I bump it down to 20 everyone is asking me "whats wrong" all day long because im just more down or anxious or something (dont know exactly how to describe the change in mood). Alternately, ive been on as much as 80mg a day (wasnt really supposed to be but I was about to blow my head off from anxiety at a serving job on a couple occasions) and the additional dose is very noticeable.

Hey,

I am on 40mg of Lexapro and have been for about 9 months. It really does alot for me I think. You should hang in there and know that you will feel better soon. I was so depressed but now I am not and I never thought it would end when it was at its worst. I can't tell if it is the Lexapro or my lifestyle change or the personal work I've been doing on myself. But it all goes hand in hand. I don't freak out and panic about things anymore. I am more comfortable with just the day to day stuff. At 30mg I was still a mess, but then at 40 I started to feel good.

The only bad thing is that if I forget to take it, my body tells me for sure! I get so incredibly dizzy by 3pm or so. It is terrible, and I can't imagine what would happen if I didn't take it for a day or more. That's kind of unnerving, but my life is at least much better without feeling hopeless all the time.

Your depression will pass, just don't ignore what its telling you. Listen to yourself. Be kind to yourself. Give yourself a break. You deserve kindness. Good luck.

You know, I've read this and heard it over & over, too.

But if it is supposedly true, then I have to wonder why raising the dose of SSRI AD's for people w/moderate to severe OCD is recommended, and often it works very well in relieving the OCD symptoms.

I realize that OCD and depression are different illnesses, but whenever I read that, it's never been specific about the ADs not being effective for a specific illness if it's over 20mg, just the dose.

Raising my AD dose over 20mg. (for both Wellbutrin and Lexapro) also helped my depression, not just my OCD.

I find it odd that my pdoc told me right from the beginning that he would NOT go over 20 mg of Lexapro with me. I think he mentioned because of my weight (about 110 lbs if lucky) but not that sure about that either.

Sometimes even a 5 mg increase can make all the difference in the world with me - I remember being on Prozac and it didn't quite "click in" until I reached 25 mg. So it kind of annoys me that my pdoc is so rigid about the 20 mg with Lexapro. Everyone's body chemistry is different, right?

Mary Jane, I hope you will become a member and be a part of our community. Also, if you type in all capital letters, it looks like you're shouting---and I'm sure that was not your intent.

I wouldn't presume to tell you which drugs you should be on, and how many milligrams of each one you should be taking. It appears that you are seeing a psychiatrist, who has prescribed these medicines for you based on whatever you are telling him about your symptoms/condition/life.

Psychiatrists are trained to treat mentally ill people. GPs are trained to keep tabs on the overall health of their patients, and then refer them to specialists if they have a condition that s/he doesn't feel competent to treat.

I personally feel that most (not all) GPs are NOT trained in the used of psychiatric drugs. It's not their area of expertise. If I were in your situation, I would diplomatically tell my GP to butt out. It's okay to talk to the pdoc about which meds you're on and at what dosage, and he probably won't mind if you relay your GP's concerns.

But in the end, I think you have to follow the advice of you pdoc when it has to do with psych meds, and tell the GP that you are being treated by a specialist and you are happy with the results.

If you don't feel that your pdoc is competent, that's a whole different issue.

My wife, with MS, has been on 40mg. of Lexapro for over a year, with pretty good results. However, for the past several days, her depression has deepened, and she thinks she needs a higher doseage. She also takes 30mg of Kadian for chronic pain, and Ritalin, or Provigil PRN for energy. Your thoughts?
