starfish
doc put me on risperdal, low dose, for 1 week, attempting to soothe my impulsive thoughts he said, if it works, it'll become part of the regular cocktail but what is it supposed to do? making me sleepy? numb? blank mind? any experiences or comments? Cetkat
At least at first it will probably make you sleepy. It acts pretty quickly.. you should notice something after the first dose. For me it stops my circular thoughts and kind of feels like a damper's been placed on them. Not numb, just removed. It's a positive feeling and helps with my anxiety. doc put me on risperdal, low dose, for 1 week, attempting to soothe my impulsive thoughts he said, if it works, it'll become part of the regular cocktail but what is it supposed to do? making me sleepy? numb? blank mind? any experiences or comments? From what I have read on these boards these last couple of months is that all meds seem to affect people differently. I was on Risperdal for almost two years...initally, it calmed down my negative racy thoughts, slept well, and I felt reasonably good the first year, but by the second year I began to feel dead inside (almost totally unemotional), so much so, I quit 34 days ago (and counting). The WD is hell, in case you were wondering. But if you need it, you need it.
scatty
I love risperdal. I never knew how bad some of my symptoms were until they started getting better. It doesn't make me sleepy at all. Actually, I don't think I've had any side effects from it. I have gone off it cold turkey with no withdrawal either. I hope you like it as much as I do! mel1
Does Risperdal cause weight gain? Akathesia? I was on Abilify after seroquel made me ssooooo fa. Abillify put my anxiety through the roof. I'm not sure about the returen to seroquel. i am up to 150 mg. and it deoesn't seem to be helping me at all. Waht is a normal dosage for Risperdal? Start-up side effects? Sorry if this is a hijack! Good luck wiht it. Let me know how it goes.

Good luck wiht it. Let me know how it goes. I dont know about akathesia but as for weight gain it tends to yes. Not so much as that is makes you put the weight on as it makes you incessently HUNGRY! I want to eat non-stop on, as in I can eat a 6 course meal without feeling full. If you learn portion control and are good are telling yourself when to stop its not so much of a problem. A normal dosage is 1-2mg. Also just so you know not everyone gets the munchies with it so don't be afraid of trying it just because you "might" have that happen, not when it could work - its worth it, really (I've been able to keep weight neutral thanks to the gym despite my eating). Starfish: For me it stops my psychotic symptoms - makes the voices go away, and simultaneously ends the mania. In essence it makes me stable (hence its a mood stabilizer). It worked wonders where my previous meds failed miserably (seroquel nuked me, abilify made me want to slit myself from ear to ear). I really hope it works for you too! My start-up effects were drowsiness and increase in acne. The former went away. From what I've read, Risperdal doesn't make you gain weight in and of itself. It just can make you hungry.. therefore gaining weight. I've gained weight, but once I realized the cause I've been able to suppress my appetite, eat healthy normal food, and have started to go back the other way on the scale. sun_zoom_spark
I took Risperdal for a year and gained a ton of weight but this coincided w/ a lithium increase. My doc wants to blame it on lithium. Funny........I haven't gained a pound since I stopped taking Risperdal. It was the only side effect I had. It didn't make me tired, just a little buzzed. starfish
it's been 2, almost 3 weeks since i started taking risperdal, and my doc finally decided to take it away slowly. he says i must take 0.5 mg every other day. does that make sense? i'm kinda afraid of going down w/o risperdal. something tells me this drug is doing all the work. but it also might be lamictal. idk, let's see. thanks for your replies
sun_zoom_spark
Starfish- I'm assuming you were taking Risperdal for breakthrough symptoms that Lamictal wasn't handling. Risperdal is approved for acute manic episodes. These episodes usually last a matter of a few weeks so what your doc's doing makes perfect sense. You should be through your episode and shouldn't need Risperdal but that's why he's coming down slow just to make sure. SZS
starfish
doc decided otherwise...now i'll be on risp for indefinite time... i started taking lamic and risp at the same time, so maybe they have some sort of synergy action... oh and doc's decision was based on last weekend's depressive episode...feeling better now though... BjornGlitchy
Risperdal has been a life saver for me. It has really helped with my baseline anxiety, calmed my obsessive thoughts and stablizes my moods. I love the stuff...and the M-Tabs taste minty fresh
