Hi, I'm not sure where to post this, but move it if need be.

SInce I titrated up to 150mg, I notice that I get hungry (real hunger pangs) faster. Like 2 hours after a regular meal. Is this my metabolism speeding up? Or is it lamictal making me fat?

Secondly, my appetite is completey gone, which is good. I gained weight from lamictal before I got to 150. Now that I'm on 150mg, a paradoxical thing seems to be going on. Anybody have a clue on this?

Does anybody have a clue as to how lamictal affects metabolism?

If you're not eating alot, your stomach will actually get smaller so it holds less food. That would mean it getting empty faster, yet not affecting it's processing rate. If you're still eating regularly, it could be a higher metabolism. Conversely, if you were eating alot and expanded your stomach, it could be that the food is still there.. yet you're not getting as full now & therefore getting hungry sooner.

Wait...when my appetite goes, like it tends to these days...I kinda don't get hunger pangs. I mean, that's the point--no appetite=no hunger.

Actually, when my metabolism speeds up, i don't really get all that hungrier either. Just kinda lose weight. For me, at least, high metabolism=low appetite. Kind of a mania thing, I guess.

Anyways. You say you gained weight on your way to 150. Generally, that's about 6 weeks. So you're saying you noticed an inordinate gain during that period that you can't chalk up to any thing else? More than a couple pounds? As WZ said, lamictal is known far and wide for being weight neutral.

Mostly my curiosity just got piqued by your incongruent, competetitive statements about hunger pangs and appetite...

When I say hunger pangs, I mean the PHYSICAL feeling of being hungry. Now, as for appetite, the DESIRE to eat, I don't have. ;)

Yes, I gained weight, which I think I may be losing now.

I've been experiencing the same thing (I finally got up to 150 about a week ago). Food sounds repulsive ("no desire') but my body (stomach) will give me the natural signals that it is hungry. Hunger pangs, stomach pain, gurggling, etc. I've also just finally started to lose weight. Which is a good thing since I'm still 15lbs overweight from having a baby 4.5 months ago. :)

If you slowly eat less and less, you can actually stop eating all together without feeling the physical hunger pangs. Or, you can train your stomach to say.. not get hungry until mid-day.

Whenever people fast, you only stay hungry for the first couple of days as well. Then the pangs disappear.

The pangs are often more about a change in routine or mental mindset than of actually having food in your stomach or not. Hence, when your routine is to eat.. you get 'hungry' when you don't - and therefore it indicates an empty stomach. But, when your routine is not to eat, you get used to that as well.. until not only does your mind think your not hungry, but your stomach gets used to not having food in it & gets smaller. It can actually get to the point where, if you eat a regular meal again, you can die (Holocaust victims).

The gurgling noise is also a sound of either digestion or emptiness.

Hmmm Okay. but i usually dont get hunger pangs before. Now I get them 3x a day. Maybe lamictal HAS speeded up my metabolism? Which is why I'm concerned. Because, is this the route that meds that make you gain weight take? That you're hungry all the time? What if lamictal is making me gain weight? I've just started 150mg last saturday so I don't notice weight loss yet. I just THINK I may be losing weight because of the loss of appetite and the hunger pangs.

If you're eating the same, haven't recently gone through a period of eating more than usual (and therefore your body would be expecting more), and are just now getting hunger pangs.. then yeah - I'd say your metabolism has sped up.

A fast metabolism makes you lose weight and/or able to eat more (or more often). Meds that make you hungry all the time & therefore make you gain weight, make you *think* you're hungry. In that case, you gain because your appetite has increased but not your physical hunger & needs.

The other way meds make you gain weight is to slow your metabolism to the point where you gain without regard to how much you are eating.

They don't make you gain by creating a faster metabolism and physical hunger pangs.
